The GT-R completely wiped the floor with it's competitors when released, and for less money too- i.e 964 model Porsche 911, Ferrari 348, Lotus Esprit.

History repeats.

Haha GT-R did what now? Careful about buying hype, its not good value.

Roy, I didn't know whether I should post those or not since it was a GT-R thread, cheers for that.

Full noise into the pits, sideways out, go Gricey!

This stopped being a GTR only thread several pages ago.

Perhaps I should rename it? Something more along the lines of :

Nissan Race Cars (and how to get your rules changed to ban us)

Love seeing anything to do with the Group A/C Nissan's, finding out what people on this forum did in a past life (aka sydneykid)

Bring it on!

Some of my pics from DECA.

May look familiar to Jetwreck.

Those pipes and the sound that comes from them are pure sex.

Yeh, i was thinking the same thing. I would love to get my hands on one of the Nismo R31s that were raced OS. Or even a Sierra. The poster of those R31 vids also has some cool footage of an 87 race at Tsukuba , all the DR30s and Starions look great.

If i had the money i would buy the just restored GMS R31 in Vic. The thing is a work of art....so neat. But i would honestly take any of the cars. Hell, mid to late last year the B&H Sierra was up for sale, so was the Caltex Sierra. And i understand Tweedies PJ Sierra is always for sale for the right price. So in my case its not a matter of no cars that i like...its purely finances

Im really hoping the Listerine Sierra that landed here last year along with the ANZ Sierra hit the track this year :P

That GMS car down in Vic is tops....still has to go through a shakedown though....should not be any problems. Did you see the Texico Sierra sold on My105.com. Also I think the Listerine Sierra is also for sale. The Caltex car needs a lot of work and the B&H car is to much money. Tweedies(2 dicks) car is a good buy....it's also 92 spec, it's just a lot of money.

Heh there was a Group A Starion that went for $40,000 on my105.com. I don't remember ever seeing it race out here. It was the 2.6lt rallyart widebody. Do you remember it?

Pretty easy find, its sitting in the Zama storage facility in Japan - or possibly out on display somewhere- either way Nissan has it.

The Ricoh GTS-R is apparently undergoing restoration in Japan also.

There was a vague intent for Nissan to run Percy/Grice in that car at Bathurst in 1988. Fred Gibson said don't bother as his cars were already more developed than the European version. You can make of that what you want.

Grice ended up driving a Walkinshaw VL and hating it.

Any car that John builds is a work of art with the sort of attention to detail that makes me think he might be a little crazy :D He has struck some strife with his Mk 1 Escort late last year which means he may finally turn his attention to the R31. The Escort build seemed to be his priority last year.

Seemed happy enough in one 2 years later though.

Lucky a certain car failed that day I think.

The question to be asked is, is this information from 1988, or from one of Fred Gibson's interviews in later times? Maybe theres a grain of truth...but then every one of Gibson's skylines hit the track a year or years later than the Japanese ones... I think perhaps Fred has been embellishing a little as history marches on and clouds the realities of the day.

1988 ATCC the HR31 was something of a late starter in the season - debut at round five - and for most of that year their efforts were marked by head gasket and gearbox failures, not massive victories, with single car entries at many rounds. By contrast there had been Nismo backed cars running in Japan since late 1987 including promising showings at the Fuji WTCC round.

I also think the eerily similar claims about the GT-R are also somewhat unlkely without a time machine situated at Nissan SVD.

Not saying anybody is lying, but I think there is some distortion of reality occurring.

The comments were contemporaneous, ie from 1988.

The 1987 Hardie Ferodo was an absolute disaster for Nissan.

Not sure about the claims for the GT-R's.

As for distorted reality there is always an amount of spin/lobbying in any pronouncements so you have to factor self interest in.

You mean with statements like this....

The GT-R completely wiped the floor with it's competitors when released, and for less money too- i.e 964 model Porsche 911, Ferrari 348, Lotus Esprit.

No doubt the GTR was the class of the field in Gp A racing. Its success in Aus and Japan proves that. But GMS with Winfield money and Skaife/Ricahrds would have just as likely won irrespective of the car they were running. Look what they did in the 2nd year of V8s with Winfield money and a class act team.

So the fact that one of the big 3 strongest teams happened to have a technical advantage just made it that much easier.

So outside of Grp A if you look at the Production Racing history of the R32 GTR it was not as great. Turbo and gearbox failures, brake problems and lack of pace, most notably in the Bathurst 12 hours where its ass was handed to it by the RX7s and 968 Porsches and M3s. If the GTR was clearly the better car off the showroom floor then it would have been far more competitive. I recall Brade Jones one year handing it to everyone in a Lotus Espirit ( i think it was prepared by Perkins Engineering ?) Its production success (or lack of) seems to be in contrast with its Grp A results where it was well funded and supported, with mostly privateer teams struggling with the GTR (Falken GTR at the mountain springs too mind)

Great car...but not the unbeatable beast that we all assume
