Hi All,

I kind of need some help, the previous owner of my car made a mess of the battery tray when he miss calculated the hole and decided to cut 2 circles next to each other to install his FMIC, so now I've got this giant hole in the battery tray that looks like ass. Furthermore, to make matter worse, he used tin snips on the hot pipe side to fit the home made cooler piping in. It's terrible as you can imagine.

Just wondering if anyone can re-weld up these ass of a holes and re-cut nice perfect circles for me and make it look nice an tidy from top and from below.

I don't mind home jobs as long as it looks good and clean.

If anyone can help and for a reasonable price, PM me...

Welding a recutting holes could be a pita.

Have you thought about grabbing a die grinding burr and grind the holes out to the new round (or other) clean shape.

Easy to do and you could even do it with an electric drill instead of a pencil grinder if you don't mind side loading the bearings for a while. Given it is only light plate it shouldn't hurt the drill much if at all.

If you go down this path I would suggest spend a bit of time taping joints etc where the grinds may end up. Once they get stuck in a join etc you will never get them out and they will rust leaving a shitty looking mark.

If the holes work out a bit oversize just make up a rubber sealing gasket or run in some pinchweld edging and make it look like that was how it was meant to be

Well legally tany hole cut in that area must be reinforced to return the rigidity back to that section of the car, so if you are willing to have someone weld in a reinforcement plate that has a clean hole in it then you are also less likely to encounter any stife from it if one day you go to engineer the car.

ok so here is what i would do if i was to keep that piping design.

Remove the pipe, weld in a patch panel of 0.9mm body steel, from the underside of the chassis. Then make a new hole for the piping around 3.5" and slightly forward as it seems to be rubbing on the front section. test fit to make sure all is smooth and no fouling.

Then, i would paint both sides of the patch with an etch primer then some chassis black paint.

get some cardboard and trace out a piece that will cover the battery tray right the way under the guard mount, all the way to the wheel well and back to the chassis rail towards the centre of the car.

Use that piece to cut out a Flat sheet of 2mm polished alloy so you can cover the entire area. mount that with screws into teh old tray. then you can cut a matching hole in that from underneath to match the bottom hole.

use that alloy sheet to remount those wires, install a catch can, radiator over flow.... etc etc etc

If you want it done as cheap as possible, you could follow the above, then cut out your patch panel and the patch, needs to me no more than 1mm gap all around, then just take it somewhere to get tig welded up, might cost you $50 to weld it depending on how good your cutting and patch is.

    • The R32 suffers from an instrument binnacle that is uncomfortably close to the design of a VN Commodore's. But beyond that, the layout of the rest of everything, and the materials (ie the vinyl coverings on dash, armrest, etc) are acceptable, and the patterns on the fabrics are not as blergh as those in the R33. And R33 seats are....quite unattractive. I know it's only small details there, but I reckon the R33 got worse than the 32. But the big blergh is the overall shape of the dash on the R33. It's just has that whole Maxima/Pulsar sort of look to it. Nothing special at all. Generic Nissan sedan. Whereas, at least the R32 dash/binnacle was different. Less a wide expanse of boringly curved plastic. More a "cockpit" sort of look, even if nowhere near to the degree that the A90 Supras got. R34 seats look good on their own, until you realise that they are indistinguishable from the shape and fabric on 70 other Japanese cars. And the foam bolsters on them suffer even worse than the earlier cars. Other than that I don't really have an opinion the rest of the R34 interior. I took the bits of the R34 I wanted (brakes and engine) and added them to the best external appearance Skyline in the modern era (the 32). So nyerr!

    • Speak for yourself, I love the R33 interior. 32 is blergh. I like the 34 interior too. Then you start getting much newer in most cars and they all turn back to blergh. 馃槢
    • 500-600hp into a RB is already 'sinking endless amounts of money' into an engine. Especially a 30 year old engine. Unfortunately this is the RB Game. Considering stock power (or at least stock components) will do ~360whp on 98 by simply turning up the boost on the stock gear on a RB26, that would be where I'd say the cutoff point for "sinking endless amounts of money into the engine" Cause to even do this reliably you'd probably need to replace all the bits anyway cause they're old, starting your sinking journey anyway. I reckon the least painful way is rebuilding the engine to make 50hp over stock lol. The 'plan your ownership around a rebuild' was a common saying 15 years ago.
