so enlight of my desecion to move out, instead of spending on the car. i can't stop myself from wanting to burn a hole in my pocket.

currently i own an auto but I'm thinking the best thing i can do to get more out of my engine without actually working the engine is to get a better gearbox as the auto one i teh boring and slow in first.

i tried to search the drivechain section of the forums but couldn't find much, which was surprising. i guess I'm try to research costs and where i can even get a gearbox from? what places charge to do it or should i do it myself? considerations that i just wont think off like pedal kits and mounts and crap. or even if I'm thinking its going to be much more different when in fact it wont be at all?

thanks guys i really love having a wealth of knowlege like you guys for me to bounce crazy idea's off

Usually a desperate need to convert to manual is a lack of real driving ability and a need to try and prove that you are cooler than you are.

If you need a manual then I assume you are going to race on the circuit. If so then buy one and make it run hard but learn to drive first, then concentrate on brakes and handling before going for power.

If you are a daily driver with no track desires then you are kidding yourself as an auto will run over 300rwkw on a PFC with a MV Autos shift kit and will be quicker through traffic and nicer in town.

i'd have to say i disagree with u gtrgeoff. i dont think you have to be involved with circuit racing to enjoy driving. If you use your car to get from a to b, your lazy or your into drag racing then an auto is the way to go but if you take pleasure out of driving even if its on the road manual is definatly the way to go. I also dont believe wanting a manual over an auto says anything about your driving ability or boosting your ego

i agree with Speedfreak, its not aimed at boosting my road penis i just really enjoy driving and want more of an experience then the auto can offer. also i have come to see the power loss that auto trannies can cause.

as per the PFC plus a shift kit i honestly know nothing about either of them? 300kw out of a stock RB20det really thats sounds abit high?

Actually almost 25 years of racing, modifying, specialist driving, instructing and heavy special loads (more than 500K km) and tracked vehicle operation usually speaks for itself.

Sure, have an opinion, but maybe back it with some real experience.

What I see is every wannabe street racer that thinks they are the next Fangio believes they have to have a manual to be a great driver, to be fully involved in the experience. I'm suggesting that the problem is not the transmission but the driver. There are a large number of "real" race drivers I know (even some in the V8 paddock) that drive premium auto vehicles without loss of Penis.

I am absolutely not convinced that you have to have a manual to be an involved or good driver. I also don't think that it is worth doing the conversion. Buy a manual? Sure! Use it properly? Great! Do the conversion because your street cred doesn't cut it? Think again.

If you aren't a skilled driver Dantay then get to the track and grab some laps with a driver in an auto. Don't believe that you need the manual.

Of my current 5 cars 3 are manual and 2 are auto. The V8 ute needs the auto to pull 2500kg of race car or boat as the manual only pulls 1600kg. So much for the a to b, lazy or daily comment. The 500hp GTR goes without saying but I have thought of doing one in an auto for my wife who is disabled. Lazy? I don't think so. How about injured in the line of duty? Service to her country and all that. The Race car was always a manual but the right auto setup would speak for itself behind a 750HP 26/30 setup. Then the V8 Soarer would just not be the right car with a manual.

Dantay there is also the search option. Look for Dangerman and his adventures pulling over 300rwkw in an auto R33. Be cooler than the Dorifto wankers. Have a slick auto and lern to drive it. For many years I instructed trainee off road drivers in the benefits of an auto especially if they weren't always on the job but was ridiculed by the "real" drivers. Now almost all of roaders are auto, plus the off road vehicle I used was a 17 ton 6x6 with a 5 speed crash box.

Real drivers indeed.

I agree to some extent with Geoff, however I really don’t care how many years you have on me, I personally find a manual performance car more controllable and predicable in motor sports events other then drag racing. That also includes mountain runs whether you agree with this activity or not. Don’t mistake that for kids trying to drift like a certain Japanese cartoon.

For a daily driver I have a preference to auto’s, then again not everyone knows what peak hour grid lock is like with a 3800pound twin plate and locked diff.

Dantay, R32’s are cheap enough anyway. You car is pretty stock yes? Sell it and just buy a manual. It’s not a hard conversion, however I just don’t see the point when we are talking $10,000 cars here.

wow there is some really good points coming out of this thanks guys ;)

i will check out Dangerman for sure, thanks for the advice Geoff its always priceless to hear from someone with years of experience under the belt, especially since i'm about five minutes old when it come to cars.

Joshwa, thats a really good point about the cost to benefit ratio too.

i would love to get the car and myself into some real track experience, the only real experience i got is a driving course i did with SDT at Mt Cotton. it sucks that raceways are limited in southeast Queensland i live like 4mins from Lakeside but its never gonna re open which sucks the big one.

I have to agree with GTR Geoff...Everything you said in your post is very true. Personally, my R34 GTT is auto, so what, i enjoy driving my car and believe there is certain skills you can learn with an automatic transmission. I dont care about street penis, as long as you enjoy the car, thats all the matters. I quite enjoy smoking coast ricers in there 5 speed manuals. :D

Its up to the driver...Anyone who says auto is crap, just dont forget respect goes both ways. Auto Drivers never pay out your manauls, so dont think you have the right to cop shit to Auto drivers.

Lets just enjoy our cars for what they are :D

Auto's are for 1 legged twats.

Either that or unko drivers with no real perception of the driving experience, like azn's and bogans.

Haha....Always something to say.

Do you actually live up here on the coast? maybe we should catch up on a cruise and you can see if am a one legged twat...

Come'on..haha.

    • I picked up an open Center with shafts. I was told the Open shafts will fit a mechanical LSD and looking at them. I think they will work. Will update
    • The manual says a lot about the different ratios requiring different shafts. all the Centers are the same but depending on the ratio, this determines the shafts because different ratios need the center to be offset more or less or right to left.
    • those 2 sets of shafts will not interchange and if you’re lucky you haven’t damaged anything with all your pressing and bashing you said you’ve done
    • Freshly built stroked RB25/28. Motor runs great but consumes a lot more oil then It should. This summer with the heat I was consuming roughly a quart per 1800-2000kms. Now with the cold weather coming in, I'm consuming a quart per 1000kms which is no bueno. I had originally chalked this out to break in taking a little longer then it should, but I'm now around 4000km's on this engine. I think it's fair to say something isn't quite right. Here's the kicker, can't find what's causing it. I've also spoken to my engine builder and Precision Turbo and can't figure it out. Here's my train of thought on possible causes and what I've done.  Precision Turbo - I originally started thinking my oil pressure might be a tad too high for my 6466 Gen2. I took the center cartridge out, and while yes there's signs of oil on the turbine heatshield, it's very moderate. There's also very minor in/out play that concerns me. I sent pictures and videos to precision and they said the residue and in/out play is minimal and they doubt this is the issue. For piece of mind, I went ahead and installed a Turbosmart OPR V2 to bring oil pressure down. Made no difference. Precision is willing to take it in on RMA for an inspection and I'll probably take them up on that offer for peace of mind. BTW. Is it just me or does the turbines inducer's look clipped and not even between each other? I just noticed this now while posting and looking at the picture zoomed in. Might just be the picture...  Rings - Hot compression test and leak down test look good. Compression is 160 +-2psi across the board. I leak down at 16% on cyl 1,2,3,5,6 and 18% on cyl4. Keep in mind I have a snap on leak down tester and they read high (I.E, 15% on my wifes 2018 Sentra with 70000kms). Sparkplugs show minimal oil (Only #4 seems to have a tad). At a quart per 1000km's though, I would be expecting them to be wet. Here's the kicker, I run WMI. I'm thinking what if my compression rings are great, but I have an oil control ring issue on cyl4 and my WMI is steam cleaning the pistons and sparkplugs? I can still see the "Spool" logo on top of my CP pistons. The only time I see smoke out of the exhaust is in the high rpm/load range. So far, this is my main culprit. I'll probably turn off my WMI and go out with the car at spring pressure tomorrow and repull the plugs. Other thing that's strange though is that I have never seen any oil in my catch can. Thing is still dry after 4000kms. Cyl1 - Left, Cyl6 - Right. Valve seals - They're new and I would expect oil consumption on idle, first cold start or during decel. None of which is happening.  Crankcase pressure - I have 2x 10an valve cover lines to a vented catch can. Head drain and opened up internal oil drain paths. I also don't run E85. I've never seen any oil in my catch can. Doubtful this is causing any issues.  Rear main seal - I have no visible leaks, but figured maybe it was my rear main seal. After now having added 2-3 quarts, I would expect oil to leak out the bottom drain channel and/or my clutch to be slipping.  Let me know your thoughts. With winter coming and taking the car off the road until spring, I'm fine with pulling the motor apart but I would hate to take it all apart and the turbo was the issue in the end.
    • Actually, the best option is probably to get some of the stronger aftermarket driveshafts that have both the 5x1 and 3x2 pattern on them, so OP can do whatever the hell OP likes with the diff in the future and not have all this angst. I posted a link to them sometime in the last 2 weeks, I'm sure.
