I think it makes sense that you DO get more power as the larger cooler is able to reduce intake temps at the 'same' boost level. Hence explaining rekins results and ones of my own.

The power will be made if the original was a more significant restriction. Rekin's graph shows the second run has more boost everywhere, as was said. If anything, the fact that it gains more power at higher engine speeds where more airflow is required just backs this up even more.

i'm more concerned with the effectiveness of the cooler. to be honest, i wasnt even expecting power gains.

i dont want to be sucking hot air into the plenum. larger cooler, better cooling. the r34 smic was suffering severe heat soak on the dyno. they had to pour water over it between runs to let it cool.

also, lets assume at 12psi, the r34 smic is causing a slight restriction. that means the turbo is now working harder than it should have to.

so if lag isnt an issue (conflicting opinions here), then the fmic is going to be healthier for the motor overall.

edit: i've got a feeling the lag issue might be down to the choice of cooler. i'm looking at a tube and fin with the trust style end tanks. here

heat soak of a side mount is a dyno booth symptom, it doesn't occur on the road to this extent. The dyno fans whislt powerfull don't simulate the airflow of higher speeds and are usually pointed directly at the radiator, hence a fmic suffers less issues.

Intake temps take a while to climb on a standard turb/standard smic o in road going conditions, a fmic takes much longer to see increases of course but, unless you are circuit bound a fmic upgrade is not going to help if you already have an R34 smic.

as always final tune & power runs are best 'bonnet down', then it's time for a road tune to finish off.

I'd be keeping the R34 unit myself till turbo upgrade time or your car is ready to go circuit racing.

  • 1 month later...

I fitted the front mount and took it for a drive tonight. It's raining though, so nothing crazy. All seems good. I didnt notice any extra lag. It does make more noises now lol. And it seems to pull well, so no complaints there.

Just wondering if a tune is recommended after the install. My tuner told me i'd definately need one. I know it was a huge benefit after exhaust mods. So i'm pretty much planning on getting it tuned.

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
