A Day In Germany With The Gt-r Engineers

GTR R35

Cinching down the chin strap of his helmet, Toshio Suezaki's appearance transforms just before his thumb deploys the tidy flush-mounted door catch of the 2009 Nissan GT-R. The factory test driver is innocuous and soft-spoken, but in this moment his eyes harden. It is behind the wheel of this car, still camouflaged to frustrate spy shooters, that Suezaki-san will wield violence incongruous with his bookish manner just minutes later

thats a nice article mate..for me any car thats 1750kg (if you convert the weight they gave in pounds it makes this) is just way too heavy. sure its fast - but imagine how much faster it would be if it weighed like..1400kg....itd be incredible.

as it stands now it weighs more than an Audi A8...and thats just ridiculous...fair enough its not a stripped out sports car.but a car with 5 years of development with GTR heritage shouldnot weigh 1750kg..thats Sedan/Mercedes etc territory.

Thats the best inside scoop yet. Damn what an article.

It stripped the 911 by 2 seconds and that, in slightly damp conditions!

i loved the way the designer referred to it as a robot and that it was never meant to be beautiful but original and unique!

Btw i will be at the unveiling ( i live in tokyo ) so that will definitely be a buzz to remember...and sure to be busy as hell... :D:)

hmmm... intrigued by that comment that the bare chassis weighs less than the 350Z's... so what's weighing it down? the AWD system? the heavily optioned interior? gonna be interesting to see how the car does on the track with that sorta chassis, and what the N1 version boasts, if they release one.

what exactly is a Premium Midship? thought it was an FR?

Thats huge.

Whats transmission was used for the record (7:38?) run?

They still going to have a conventional 6 Speed?

So disappointed when the Evo X came out and "only" offers a 5 speed manual/Fancy Automatic flappy thing.

Lol I'm guessing once people go to DSG they wont ever want to go back to manual again.

Why would you want to go to manual? So you can push a clutch in? Why not use a system that is faster and will do everything that a manual does anyway only you dont have to worry about the clutch. Will make heel toeing a thing of the past :)

dont ever consider yourself a driver if you cant do it.

you seem to think DSG is going to take over the world.

driving a car is all about how involved you are. You advocating the DSG, not lamenting the loss of manual shifting shows me you may not care about being as involved as you can...

I don't understand why you keep saying DSG elimates heel toe? why would it? heel toe is just as valid with a DSG or other sequential box. and it's still useful.

I demand you go out and rip out that power steering in your car... coz you know, real men have biceps of lumberjacks so that they can turn the steering wheel in a manner which is as involved in the driving experience as possible.

drifters drive without power steering all the time here in japan . It increases the feel, not using a condom has the same effect.

    • Nah, it's not the reduced knock margin. It is a direct mechanical effect of having to initiate the combustion earlier, while the piston is still rising, which starts to exert combustion pressure on the rising piston earlier, making the rest of the engine work harder to finish driving the piston up to TDC where the combustion pressure stops being a negative and starts being a positive. Your modern engine that only needs ~10° to make MBT doesn't waste the other 10 or so degrees of crank rotation. That's almost all of it. The difference in knock margin might go either way. Remember that modern engines to which you are currently comparing the long tractor engine (the RB) are now running super high compression, direct injection, tricky cam control and maybe even cylinder pressure sensors. You're not comparing apples with other fruit. It's apples and sea weed, or some other evolutionarily primitive vegetation. And remember, squish only really comes into play at the very end of the stroke. It certainly does good things, but it is not the biggest contributor to what's going on. It is quite possibly much less important in 4 valve head than 2 valvers also, because there is so much less squish available to a 4 valve anyway.
    • Food for thought, a longer stroke motor would need less ignition timing vs. a shorter stroke motor requiring more ignition timing.
    • Thanks Duncan, HART is only 10 mins from me (I did my bike license there), it'd be awesome if it ran these types of things.  Sutton Road does look good and they take fewer cars than SMSP which is good.  Surely you have enough land to lay a few million tonnes of concrete and some sprinklers D?
    • I thought an engine that needs more ignition timing to make power is going to result in less power due to reduced knock margin? More time for the combustion to propagate -> more time for it to heat up the rest of the mix to detonation.
    • DCS, war thunder, IL2 - mostly flight sim games.
