Hey there,

The last two of nights when leaving work (11pm) the car has been blowing a large amount of white smoke from the exhaust system. I'm not sure why, hence the reason for this post.

The car is a 1993 Nissan Skyline GTST

I've only noticed this white smoke on Tuesday night but didn't take too much notice thinking it was just because it was cold. But, It's happed again tonight and it's got me worried as its a little more then usuall on cold start-ups.

The car didn't seem to have any of this white smoke during the day - on start up or driving down to the local Autobarn.

Recently the car has had an oil change, oil filiter change and a few weeks before that had a complete coolant flush as the Water Pump needed to be replaced.

The car has also had a complete forged rebuild about 5 months ago, and also a Haltetc ECU installed about 2 months ago - I'm also running the stock turbo.

Tomorrow I guess I'm going to start with cleaning the intercooler pipes and probably check the spark plugs while I'm at it. Also have a small coolant leak which I'll also fix tomorrow.

Only other thing I think it maybe is the turbo seals, but honestly I hope its not!

I've tried to provide as much information as I could, but any questions or anything I'd be more then happy to answer them - really want this issue fixed :D

Thanks again,

Aron

white smoke = oil in exhaust,

now forged pistons, do expand quite alot from hot 2 cold compared to cast pistons and others, so ona cold motor the piston will b rather loose in the cylinder (some people even have knockin etc) maybe the oil you put in on the last oil change is a little thin and by-passing the rings when cold...

but most likely ur turbo seals are stuffed lol

Is this whilst driving? Idle? or load? plus noticed your in brissy, we have had some relative humidity lately at night time it could be condesation. need more info as per above

I've used Royal Purple SAE 10W-40 for quite a few months and never had this problem.

It's while the car is idle, once I'm driving I can't notice any white smoke but it's hard to tell when your in the drivers seat.

-_-StRyDeR-_-[/b]]i get the same, only in winter though lol. its condensation

Even on really cold start ups, colder then the last two nights I haven't had this problem. However, I noticed only one drip of condensation/water from the tip of the exhaust.

Alrighty, here's just an update,

I've fixed that coolant leak I had, I had another look at the white smoke I started it up this morning when the car was cold, and there is a minimal amount of white smoke, probably from the cold start?

Took it for another drive, power seems good, if not better then usual - I guess I'll have to see if it smokes tonight after work while letting the car warm up.

I don't think its the turbo seals, because if it was it'd be doing it all the time.

It could be the valve stem seals because it only happens when the car is cold, but its only happing at night so its confusing.

Maybe there's a little bit of oil in the intercooler piping? I'll give that a clean soon see if that gets rid of it.

Or, lastly, could just be my head

If anyone has any other ideas, suggestions please do let me know :)

Thank-you very much for your help.

White smoke on a cold start is more than likely water vapour condensing in the cooler outside air (the compustion process produces water, amongts other things).

But, not large amounts like I'm getting at night on cold starts?

White smoke is not from oil.. Blue smoke is oil smoke so i dont think it's blow by past your rings even with forgies these days thermal flex isnt like it used to be so i doubt it's that, or your valve stem seals.

good luck though come us updated but.

is it smoke or steam, next time it happens watch it as it comes out of the pipe, if it disapears after a meter or 2 its steam, if it hangs around in a cloud for a few meters its smoke.

When I first start the car it's steam, after a couple of minutes it becomes smoke.

Here's the latest;

Started the car tonight at work to let it warm up as usual, noticed white smoke again, reved the car a little bit and I got alot more white smoke and black smoke too.

It also smells like oil/fuel..

Could it be a bad dose of fuel?

Hey man what sort of breather system is on your motor? ie catch can?

my car went for a few weeks blowing white smoke similar to yours, it turns out the cank case was pressurising due to blocked breather lines. this was causing oil to blow out the rear turbo seal.

doesn't sound right but when I replaced the hoses to the catch can it went away :)

have a look!

I'll check my breather hoses today, but I don't have a catch can on the car though.

By the way, thanks to everyone who has been trying to help me :D

Hopefully I can get it sorted soon.

    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all! • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.
    • Hope the cans went down well at least
    • 255 can't go wrong with the price.
    • When I was replacing my pump due to being stranded in the wrong state, I went with the Deatschwerks 320lph kit. It is a direct plug in to the stock wires, harness, everything. It comes with a plug... but you can plug the OEM plug directly into this thing. https://justjap.com/products/deatschwerks-dw300-fuel-pump-nissan-s13-silvia-r32-r33-r34-skyline-c34-stagea?currency=AUD Downside: Won't actually flow that much on boost if you want to push it on E85, but it's comparable to the 040/255 etc. Little more actually.
