Im not really sure what detonation or pinking is supposed to sound like...but all i know is that when it occurs it makes a loud "tick tick tick" or "knock knock knock" sound...

Today ive been kind of thrashing my car during quite a hot weather on about 10.8 psi...After i brought it in to a garage for cooling i just opened the bonnet, and it gave out a "tick" sound but it wasn't constant, then a minute later it gave another "tick" sound coming from the turbo side of the engine i THINK?? Then later it didn't happen again but im just worried thinking maybe its just the start of my turbo detonating or maybe because its just a hot weather its making those sounds...

When det/pink does occur, will it happen constantly? and when it does will it only give out sound when turbo is at boost? or does it also occur at vaccum (car stationary)?

What do u guys think?

heheh pinging aye? i just got confused cuz whenever i said pinging before some told me its PINKING then when i say pinking some say its pinging so i get confused...so i use detonating now :)

Anyway it ticked whilst the engine was ON not off by the way, if that changes anything?

When det/pink does occur, will it happen constantly? and when it does will it only give out sound when turbo is at boost? or does it also occur at vaccum (car stationary)?

the ticking is just exhaust/engine heat like dan said, and will happen when hot, cold, on or off. it's completely normal. :)

engine pinging/detonation/knock will mainly only happen at high revs when the air/fuel ratio isn't smooth. beleive me, you'll know when your engine starts pinging!

If you popped the bonnet in the gargage - it wont be detonating mate, your motor would be dead if that was the case in the gargage

You'll only find this occurs under load, or if a fuel pump dies in which case it wont last long anyhow and stall.

I bet you have a dead manifold gasket. Nothing more.

Common problem, go see your mechanic to get it fixed

what type of ticking noise? cuz the engine itself makes all sorts of noises close to ticking as well....

Is this ticking noise loud or weak? is it metallic? can i get an example like "clock ticking" or something?

thanks so much i appreciate it....

Mate i honestly think your better off visiting a mechanic that deals with Skylines.

Get him to show you in person so you know for the future.

What something sounds like to one person, might not mean the same to another

cheers

Thanks Nismoid i appreciate your help anywayz... Im happy its not the ping, and also im pretty sure it ain't the gasket cuz i just took it for a drive and it didn't seem to lose any power at all (cuz i thought u lose power when the gaskets blown)...Also i turned the engine on and it gives out a "tick" (sound like when a sheet of metal bends, then bends back the original shape), and even after i just took it for a drive it gave it...But the gasket blowing im assuming should be constant "ticking" sound from that area under the bonnet???

    • Oof, I will forevermore have those shredded gears in mind whenever someone talks about showing mechanical sympathy towards their car. Thanks for the photos, fascinating stuff!

    • The holdups last year were drivetrain related. I had the car out right after getting the bearing issue resolved. Third launch and the car didn't move after releasing the clutch. It had sheared all the engagement teeth off the 1st gear.    Thankfully no other damage was done. I set an aftermarket gear beside an OEM gear and found that the engagement teeth on the OEM gear were much larger and better supported. Looking through my bin of spare transmission gears I found that there are two types of tooth on the OEM first gears - the larger tooth and the smaller tooth. It looks like most aftermarket gearset manufacturers base their design on the smaller tooth. OEM large tooth left - Speedtek, OS Giken, etc or OEM small tooth right Decided to give that larger engagement tooth a try. Pressed the ring off an OEM gear and sent it to a transmission manufacturer here in the States. They did their "faceplating" operation with my synchro ring on the Speedtek gear.   I reassembled it, took it back to the track and promptly destroyed the gear itself.  I'll rebuild this and use it as a spare - thankfully just first gear and the countershaft are damaged beyond repair. Definitely disheartening but my welded on engagement tooth ring held up!  Moved to Speedtek's dog engagement design as the gears appear to be much stronger. So far they have taken much more abuse at the track. Also scored a Stillway lockout from the Netherands for super cheap. It's for some other RB transmission so it took a bit of fabrication to fit but honestly a very easy job. I also had to heavily modify the gates as they were very different.   Then for some reason at the last test and tune a silicon coupler below the throttle blew off and took out the radiator and fan. Thankfully it was in the burnout box and not down track. This car is really beating me up - I still haven't made a pass in it. Ran it through the gears many times on the street but it keeps biting me at the track.  Currently in the process of replacing the radiator and remaking the throttle pipe to remove the coupler and use a cast 90 and a vband. I WILL get this thing down the track...
    • Covers most of the above points really. There's a few exceptions but most just see driving as an irritating but necessary task they must complete if they want to get anywhere on time. Also see it as a good time to show their awesome multi-tasking abilities on their mobile and/or doing their makeup.
