Hi Guys,

I've got a problem with my R33 speedo - every so often it doesn't work! When I start the car and drive away, neither the speedo, trip meter or odometer will even move. If I hit the dash a few time (few hundred on some occasions) it will come back to life.

I have one theory why this is so: some einstein at the yard I bought the car from sprayed armour all all over the dash, and I can see that some of it has dried around the trip meter openning. I know that armour stuff goes sticky when it dries, so I'm guessing its freezing up my trip meter, which in turn stuffs everything else up.

Anyone experienced this problem? And any ideas besides spraying some WD40 (is there anything it can't do) into the speedo mechanism.

Thanks

Dan

Could be a loose speedo feed. If the speedo on the R33 is still mechanical, you should be able to feel it if you put your hand up under the dash and reach behind the instruments. I've had my dash apart a couple of times but never bothered to look at what type of speedo connection it has...

the cluster is all electronic

3 plugs in the back that could have bad connections

take them out and clean em with crc contact cleaner or something similar

the speedo also gets its power from the screws that are holding it in place so could be a bad connection there too

otherwise the motor in the speedo could be fkd

I am currently chasing a similar problem in my cluster but I think I can help with yours. If you take the speedo head out (which includes the odometer and trip meter) there is a pcb in the back of it. This pcb has many many dry solder joints and should be completely resoldered. I would think this is a very likely reason why it is so intermittant.

Hope it helps
