I wouldn't be spending $$ on replacing valve stem seals to fix only a cold start smoky problem.

taking the head off isnt as hard as it looks, just remember where everything goes and make sure when you put it back on use new head bolts (they stretch) and use a torque wrench so you get the right torque, otherwise you might have problems with your head gasket later on downt he track.
