what octane you need depends on your cars state of tune, iclduing mods. If you've changed your car in any way since that sticker was applied its no longer valid - so be careful.

this is going to spark off a debate.  Frankly speaking, is there anyone out there who had tried BOTH fuel and give a better assessment?

GenesisR32

had a friend with a proton satria gti... he ONLY used caltex vortex.. from the station in his home town... after 15,000kms, his fuel filter needed replacing and needed an injector service as the shitty fuel clogged up his system... so if it aint good enough for a proton, then its not good enough for a skyline!

Mobil don't see their 98RON fuel in QLD, only south of the border from what I have seen.

I also read a thread saying how the extra additives in the Optimax, when left unburnt (yeah, lines on boost don't burn half the fuel they use) the fuel causes stains on the paintwork on the rear, and needed buffing off. So yeah, I use ultimate. I guess they are much the same, but BP's seem to have more servos and I tend to need filling up a fair bit.

Thats my bit

i used ultimate, because its mostly avaliable.

bp now converted all their LRP tanks to ultimate, so now you povo bp station have ultimate.

i use ultimate because when running it in my old bike (2stoke) it ran better then optimax.

i do not notice any diference in the skyline between bp and shell.

the only difference anyone would notice is its detnation properties.

trust me, unless u get really shit fuel, you will not notice the performance difference, unless its 2 stroke. only way you can tell if its better or not, is if it pings or not.

you might get better ecconomy out of a certain fuel. maybe try stick to that fuel and reset your ecu. then see what your cosumption is like.

the problem with BP is they practically control the market. There was a stage where a chain email was sent out urgign ppl to use non-BP stations so that they would put their prices down, however with the optimax shortage looks like BP is winning again, they make huge profits on fuel, could be a good investment hehe!

Well i have been comparing both in the last few weeks. With optimax, it feels like it pulls a bit harder when accelerating, but i only get around 300km's from a full tank of it. With ultimate i usually get around 400km's sometimes more per tank.

I really don't care what anyone says about "they heard certain servos just use premium fuel and put additives in it" because its most likely BS and all servos probably add stuff to their fuel anyway, which is not always a bad thing though.

There is Optimax around Brisbane at the moment but it will run out again very shortly. Filled up at the Shell at Moggil Rd Taringa and the attendant was saying that they had a delivery on Friday of 22000L and were already down to 5000L and the truck driver that delivered on Friday said there wasn't going to be much around for a while yet. The attendant said he had been copping an ear full all week from annoyed optimax users. I wonder what the reason is for the shortage?

    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
    • I somehow quoted my post instead of editing it. I regret nothing.
