Hi Everyone

Just picked up my 03 V35 350GT.

Love the car so far.

Just filled her up after getting about 380kms from a full tank. Is that normal for these cars?

It doesn't really surprise me, I used to drive a 3L 2JZ soarer and only got about 400kms from a full tank.

Anyway, i hope to learn a lot about this great car from the people on this forum.

Thanks

Hi Mick, congrats on your new car.

Check carefully what you filled to get 380klms ! . The car has an 80ltr tank. Im thinking you filled 50 litres or perhaps you only ran regular unleaded ??- not good- they need min 95 oct or higher. I only fill 98. On good run city running (syd) I get 550 to 600klm on a 70 litre fill or 8 to 8.5 klm/L.. The very worst even with lead foot all week is 500 on 70 litres. ( I hate that litres per 100 klms makes no sense to me especially when trip computer is in klms/L!).The light comes on at around 15L to go.

I managed 12.5k/L on the open road which would just about do Syd - Mel with a little city driving. Mines an "05, 6man coupe. I hope you misread your fill .Goodluck with the new beast!

I always have to translate km/L back to L/100km to make sense of it. L/100km is the industry standard. No idea why they show km/l in the V35, all the Aust. delivered Nissans show L/100km. I am guessing it makes it easier to convert the system for the G35, which is MPG, and a higher figure is better.

Thanks for the replys.

It's a auto 350GT with 70,000kms. It just had a service 1,000kms ago.

I don't think it needs a tune. It runs really smoothly.

I have only filled the car once since I picked it up Sunday. I put regular shell unleaded(91 I think). Should I be using premium(V Power)?

I dont think that I have a heavy right foot haha maybe I do.

You should be using at least 95, don't use 91 except in emergencies. you can get knocking with 91, and the ECU will retard the ignition timing to prevent engine damage, this will result in reduced performance and economy.

You can use 98 (V power) if you like, I didn't get any benefits from 98, but you can give it a try, some people claim to get better fuel economy with 98.

Alright thanks.

Would it hurt putting some fuel injector cleaner in?

Mick, cleaner wont do much. If I were you try to get 20 litres of 98 octane in asap. It will balance it out a little. As the handbook says use min of 95 octane. There is a slight improvement in economy on 98 and an improvement in mid range torque. I used 100 oct(shell) years back with my r33 gts t & unbelievable bottom end torque..Any car that has variable camshaft timing will see an improvement in performance/mileage. I only use 98 it looks after the engine on the long runm

Itried 98 for a few months in my 350GT 6sp and also in my wife's J31 CVT Maxima(which also runs a VQ35DE), and saw no difference in economy, and no discernibleperformance improvement. Technically, there is no reason a stock NA enginetuned only for 95 should see an improvement or benefit from a higher octanefuel, regardless of VVT/VCT or not.

Some fuel companies may put extra cleaning agents in their 98 fuel, which maybe helpful.

However, many people claim to have noticed differences with 98, so it might beworth a try to see what you find.

Technically there is a reason why there is a diff. 3/95th to be precise or 3.166%. Your right in that its not discernable to many. Its about 20klms per tank. In terms of performance its a similar story. However ECU's drive engine performance based on fuel air mix sensors and if the octane is higher then it will make a difference dependant on the ecu & the engine.

NA motors and ECU like in Ferrari are a perfect example. Ferrari didnt inveet 100 million dollars in the development of Vpower for nothing.

TheVQ ECU can't determine between octane ratings, unless you run an octane too lowand it results in knocking, then it will retard the ignition. other than that, there is no difference in required mixture for higher octane fuel. Higher RONsimply means it has a higher resistance to detonation, it allows an engine torun higher cylinder compression pressure without the fuel mix 'self igniting'.A higher octane does not mean it has a higher energy density. Although it doesallow you to run a slightly higher spark advance in some situations.

As for the 3.166% difference, I get more difference than that from one tank tothe next, with the same fuel from the same outlet, and driving under the sameconditions. It would probably take me a year to get 2 tank fills with less thana 20km difference in range.

Not trying to say you didn't get a noticeable difference, just that I wouldconsider that figure well within the normal variations, and I would need afigure more like 8% to offset the cost difference.

As for Ferrari, I have no idea about their ECUs or their investment decisions,so I can't comment there.

So I put a full tank of v-power in today.

The fuel gauge was showing just under a quarter left of fuel. Could only take 55L ($90!!!! ohmy.gif).

I hade traveled 400kms with still 25L still in the tank (80L tank, correct?) on 91.

Not too bad. I have tried to drive a bit more economically.

Thanks for your replys again guys.

OK guys chill out.

The V has a common problem with the fuel gauges. You need to clean the sensors in the tank. Easy job.

When your fuel light comes on you probably have 1/4 still in the tank.

Pull your back seats out. Take the two lids off the tank, pull out the pump and sensors and rub the metal sensors with a cotton tip. There more detailed DIY do a search.

Good Luck

Neat tip Paul, Sounds like Mick could use it.

Mick 400k on 55 litres of the wrong fuels is ok. Just hope no long term damage to the engine. Did ya notice any pinging from the engine?. Just check when your low fuel warning light comes on after the next few fills.

Once you get used to the trip computer you tell exactly how to much fuel needed to fill each time. I get it right to the nearest 1/2 to 1L.

Its not just a mileage thing you will notice How the car revs more easily from low speed all the way through rev range. It aint heaps but once you ve been driving it a while.

Hi guys and girls, Ive had my V Coupe a bit over 2 months now. Street driving and track driving, I could not be happier with it. Coilovers are going in, in a couple weeks. I hope in the future I can meet some fellow QLD V drivers.

Cheers,

Sam
