Was thinking afm? but while car was running i tried fiddling with wires n nothing happened at all? Any help please.. It did it about 3 times on the way home for no more than a few seconds, i gave it a big bootfull n it was fine? help help help.. I got no idea cause i havent really experience any problems similar or read about this sorta thing happening.. please if anyone knows wat i should check or wat the problem is, post it up!

Thanks,

Steve.

could be afm on the way, but could also be fuel pump or module, do u have and safc?, i've seen em f**k up and ppl change afm but no avail, all sorts of shit to consider just depends on circumstances, what revs was it dying at was the car hot or cold, did it die tottally or was it popping and farting, you can bridge the wires under the dash inside the fuse panel lid for OBD and use the computer to tell u the fault code, if the afm has a problem the computer will have stored it as a fault code, otherwise u might want your mechanic to put a fuel pressure gauge on your line and check the pressure. good luck

No safc, however car is going in for a tune in about 2weeks and installing aftermarket computer or safc2.. So hopefully that helps..

Did take it 4 a drive 2 get dinner n car didnt fail once on me, under load in 4th at 40ks.. was sweet.. under load in 2,3rd gear full boost n car was fine.. So f*ks me wat it is.. Car was hot when it screwed up to.. Didnt really make a popping or farting noise, just more of a dying noise like u stalled the car or turned it off while driving.. really weird.. im going 2 go take the afm off n have a look @ it along with the wiring.. But thanks for the reply mate.

  • 3 weeks later...

anyone got any ideas?

have also replaced fuel pump & tried a different crank angle sensor with neither of these items proving 2 help me? im sure it has 2 be something electrical but i cant think wat it is. :)

car also stalled once when i was warming it up in the morning.. like i go off 2 brush my teeth n shit b4 work n leave car 2 warm up n i go back out 2 garage n car has stalled itself.. wtf. throttle position sensor maybe? someone clarify for me :) ??

Do you have an atmo-venting BOV? Its probably not that but its an easy source of a similar stalling problem to eliminate.

yeah bro i do.. but thing is, car splutters n was backfiring n shit. was on the highway tonight n car decided 2 play up.. dropped it back 2 third n felt like i was on rev limiter.. popping n shit.. im like wtf.. has 2 be injectors 4 sure? wat u reckon? yay or ney?

i dnt know bout skylines but with a silvia id say coil packs, change them and see what happens, heating up and having problems more than likely coil packs

its not the coilpacks they are splitfires.. n wen they decide 2 go the car will just miss i think?

in all honesty mate, split fires play up too u know, ive heard of alot of incidents were this happens, if u have a mate or the original ones lying around just try it... coil packs have a funy way or stuffing around... u not losing nething but excluding things 1 by one. up to u neways.

i know mate, its random tho.. it doesnt just cut out all the time or when its just hot or wateva? i mean if i warm the car up.. after a few mins it cuts out n stalls.. :s However when i leave work n warm car up its never done it? Figure that out.. then some days it wont even splutter/back off n i dont understand why not. If it was doing it all the time it would make it easier 2 determine wat problem is cause i could just swap/plug n play with the coils 4 example.. but the chances of it actually doing it after i swap or do it when i want it 2 are bare minimum.. so annoying :D

sounds like afm had same probs with my gtr for about 3 months then it crapped itself

thats good!! cause i just bought an afm off some dude from tassie, hopefully it fixes the problem, fingers crossed.. :D

So anyone wanan buy a high quality broken afm off me? very good product!! =D haha

it will be the AFM.

what you should have done is this..

bought one of these..

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runner/tech...t%20cleaner.jpg

taken your AFM off like this..

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/up...-1123337645.jpg

Then let the 2 join in holly sprayamony.

test it out.

if that doesn't work, you should have gone to dicksmith and bought one of these..

http://www.polymerclayexpress.com/images/soldering_iron.jpg

and some of this

and some of this..

Then you should have done a search on SAU for the words SOLDER+AFM

Here's one I prepared earlier

I would say check your piping for an air leak/loose piping aroud the air flow meter.....

is the afm positioned on the cooler piping or on your intake??

I had a similar problem with my R31 back in the day..... turned out to be an air leak....

when you put your foot down theres alot of air rushing through.... so even if your pipes are loose the afm will register some sort of air flow.

on idle - there isnt much air rushing through so if the air is escaping somewhere through the piping before it gets to you afm (thus not enough air for the afm to register) your engine will stall......

just another thing to check.... good luck with solving it :P

I think it's definitely the AFM ... check my thread.. same shit... getting this fixed soon!

Spot on mate.. was the afm :P hope that helps everyone else having the same problems/issues.

    • Lucky man, who owns it in the family? Any pics?
    • The engine stuff is Greg Autism to the Max. I contacted Tony Mamo previously from AFR who went off to make his own company to further refine AFR heads. He is a wizard in US LS world. Pretty much the best person on earth who will sell you things he's done weird wizard magic to. The cam spec is not too different. I have a 232/234 .600/603 lift, 114LSA cam currently. The new one is 227/233 .638 .634. The 1.8 ratio roller rockers will effectively push this cam into the ~.670 range. These also get Mamo'ified to be drilled out and tapped to use a 10mm bolt over an 8mm for better stability. This is what lead to the cam being specced. The plan is to run it to 6800. (6600 currently). The Johnson lifters are to maintain proper lift at heavy use which is something the LS7's supposedly fail at and lose a bit of pressure, robbing you of lift at higher RPM. Hollow stem valves for better, well everything, Valve train control. I dunno. Hollow is better. The valves are also not on a standard valve angle. Compression ratio is going from 10.6 to 11.3. The cam is smaller, but also not really... The cam was specced when I generated a chart where I counted the frames of a lap video I had and noted how much of the time in % I spent at what RPM while on track at Sandown. The current cam/heads are a bit mismatched, the standard LS1 heads are the restriction to power, which is why everyone CNC's them to get a pretty solid improvement. Most of the difference between LS1->LS2->LS3 is really just better stock heads. The current cam is falling over about 600rpm earlier than it 'should' given the rest of my current setup. CNC'ing heads closes the gap with regards to heads. Aftermarket heads eliminate the gap and go further. The MMS heads go even further than that, and the heads I have in the box could quite easily be bolted to a 7.0 427ci or 454 and not be any restriction at all. Tony Mamo previously worked with AFR, designed new heads from scratch then eventually founded his own business. There he takes the AFR items and performs further wizardry, CNC'ing them and then manually porting the result. He also ports the FAST102 composite manifold: Before and after There's also an improved racing crank scraper and windage tray. Helps to keep oil in the pan. Supposedly gains 2% power. Tony also ports Melling oil pumps, so you get more oil pressure down low at idle, and the same as what you want up top thanks to a suitable relief spring. There's also the timing chain kit with a Torrington bearing to make sure the cam doesn't have any thrust. Yes I'll post a before and after when it all eventually goes together. It'll probably make 2kw more than a setup that would be $15,000 cheaper :p
    • Because the cars wheels are on blocks, you slide under the car.   Pretty much all the bolts you touched should have been put in, but not fully torque up.   Back them off a turn or two, and then tighten them up from under the car with the wheels sitting on the blocks holding car up in the air.
    • Yes. Imagine you have the car on the ground, and you mine away all the ground under and around it, except for the area directly under each individual wheel. That's exactly how it'd look, except the ground will be what ever you make the bit under each wheel from
    • Yes, if you set the "height" right so that it's basically where it would be when sitting on the wheel. It's actually exactly how I tighten bolts that need to be done that way. However....urethane bushes do NOT need to be done that way. The bush slides on both the inner and outer. It's only rubber bushes that are bonded to the outer that need to be clamped to the crush tube in the "home" position. And my car is so full of sphericals now that I have very few that I need to do properly and I sometimes forget and have to go back and fix it afterwards!
