I know everyone has probably read that and said to themselves why on earth would you want to do that!?

Here's my situation. After wanting an R34 since i was old enough to feed myself the time has come when my hours upon hours of hard work have paid off and i have saved enough to get one. Problem is that, well, i'm on my P's and those lovely restriction laws in victoria mean only n/a skylines for me. After reading extensively through these forums the consensus seems to be that if i buy an n/a skyline i'm going to regret it further down the track. okay enough beating around the bush, basically i want to know if its actually possible/a good idea to get the 25gt-t, rip the turbo out (essentially making it a 25gt) then pop it back 2 years down the track when i'm off my p's and a competent enough driver to handle a 208kw 'line. Also how costly would the whole taking the turbo out procedure be?

oh and i appologise in advance if this is a completely stupid question and not actually possible, my knowledge into the mechanics of cars is very limited at best!

I think you may find that even though it is a good idea.. it wont work..

the car may not physically have a turbo, but in vic roads/cops systems the car will show as being a turbo model and you will get done for it, plus it would be over the power / weight ratio.. dont quote me on this tho just going of stuff off the top of me head lol :)

u sir r a tool, sell the car and buy a gt ull make some money to

theres that many things that u would need to change to make it a NA itll cost so much its not funi,

plus as jezza said vicroads classified it as a turbo model as it will also b classifed

sell ur gtt and buy a gt

Hi.

There is plenty of info around mate, so ill be locking after this post as we have gone into it at length.

To summarise for you.

The car is still build-plated as a TURBO. So it is therefore illegal.

You would need to have it re-complied with EVER single proper NA factory part on the motor.

Right down to brakes/stud pattern/NA motor/exhaust and so on. Removing the turbo doesnt essentially make its a NA... as its still the turbo motor :)

So simply put, it would cost you well over $10,000 i reckon. By the time you sourced all the parts, labour to convert.

Compliance fees, Engineers fees and so on.

So buy the NA, drive it for a few years (inline with the law) and then sell up and buy a turbo

Cheers

Ash

    • Hi soviet_merlin, We appreciate your concern regarding this possibly being some sort of PR/Political hype, I assure you that is not the case, I wish we could claim something like that, but in this case, we merely reached out for comment on the basis of the outrage we too felt, as those heavily in the automotive industry. Ps. the original source in the social media post is CarExpert not CarExplore.    Best, CE.
    • Made a bit of a discovery, but while I was cruising, I randomly decided to test to see if it worked and it showed up on my IC7. The entire time I tested it before, I never thought to turn the ignition on. I only tested it with head lights turned on but with the ignition off. Huge oversight on my end. I’m a dummy. I know.
    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much
