Hi all,

The head unit that came with my car was a Panasonic MRX777 (CD and mini disc in single din unit - http://www.minidisc.org/part_Panasonic_CQ-MRX777.html).

The whole thing lights up fine, playes radio stations etc, but when I insert a CD or a mini disc, it whirs for a bit, then says "E1" (disc error), ejects the CD and shuts down.

Anyone have any ideas?????????? :)

The head unit that came with my car (sony) did the same thing but only on some discs. Couldn't hack it so I changed head units. If you must keep this unit though try and find a car audio repairer or call / take it to panasonic (or pioneer).

hippy, JVC have a CD / MD single DIN as well.

Yeah, doh, meant Panasonic (changed now :D ).

When I say it 'whirs', I mean it sounds like it's reading the CD (just like my normal CD players do), but then it complains of the error. It does the same thing whether I'm using the MD or CD (even tried some 'made in Japan' CDs).

sorry i just read your first post again.

most 'new' head units will have a transport screw in them that stops the carriage moving etc. when they are packaged up and shipped (well they used to when i was last installing). they are normally marked on the side or top of the unit saying 'transport screw remove before installation' (or has it in the manual, and normally have a small red head on them.

if it's already in the car (used) unit then i would suspect the laser assembly or something around that area. which would mean it needs to be taken to a repair agent.
