Hi everyone.

I remember hearing that R32 and R33 GTSt diffs are the same except for the back plate to allow for a different hicas rack.

Is this correct?

Reason is that there aren't many 2nd hand diffs for an R32 and I have a backing plate from an R32.

I'm after a stocky to put a 1.5 way centre into it.

thanks,

Russ

I've been chasing the same for the same reason.. also to go to 4.1 ratios. I have been informed that the crown wheel bolt pattern is different, if you find out otherwise, let me know :)

It you haven't bought the diff yet, I think you could just buy an 1.5way suited to a 33 maybe.

Nah I want to start with a new diff I know all about unless if one comes up cheap enough.

Surely somebody knows?

the backing plate is different.

The front mounts are different. you need to machine up a bush and press it in.

The crown wheel bolt pattern is the same. This one is actually a bit of a myth as there are actually different bolt diameters in the r200 centers but i'm pretty certain that the r32 and 33 ones are the same size as r32 actually has the larger size bolts. Doesn't matter really as there are converter bolts available from nismo that have a larger shank to suit the larger hole in the center and a smaller thread to suit a smaller crown wheel bolt size as used in s13 ratios (3.9's). pretty certain i have some floating around somewhere....

Thanks mate. Same ratios too?

nah, s14 ~3.7 from memory, s13 ~ 3.9, r33gtst ~ 4.1 and r32gtst ~ 4.3.

very roughly. A bit of research can confirm the exact ratios available. there are a few ratios in between and i think the r32gts4 is close to 4.4

Hmm so I should be able to bolt an R33 crownwheel to my R32 Nismo diff? just need to utilise converter bolts with a thicker shank?

I have been given so much conflicting information over this! I want to drop the ratios a bit as 4.3's with the RB30 is a bit too short.

Thats worst case. You'd need to confirm the bolt size on the crown wheel once you have the diff open.

Ahh OK, so if I grab myself a 33 diff it should all bolt up I just MAY need some converter bolts?

By the sounds of what I was previously told, it wasn't going to work at all and I needed to stick to S13/R32 diffs.

  • 2 weeks later...
so... in theory... i could also buy an r33 diff to bolt up into my 32 for lower cruising revs...

I am sitting on 3100 rmp at 100 clicks...this seem far to high?

Yeah but it's only 5% difference. So 2945 rpm instead of 3100. If you do, sell me your R32 diff.

    • Hi guys, Sorry to butt in and take it slightly off course, although still on the VCAM subject.  I had VCAM put into my Tomei 2.8 bottom end and I struggle to take off because the engine has very little torque caused by VERY low dynamic compression at 60psi. But once off the mark and especially on boost, the engine rev happily all the way to 8000rpm and makes 630hp at 20psi of boost on E85 at the rear hubs. Has anyone had any similar experience or any suggestions on what might cause this low compression at low rpm? I am in the process of converting it into a 8hp transmission and with this low torque, the engine would not even stay running until the throttle is opened to more than 30% and then I loose all vacuum.
    • Last year I got a set of MCA street coilovers for my turbo Forester after my son hitting a concrete gutter/wall on a small bridge causing the whole drivers side suspension to get bent because the rain just made the car slide out I love them, I think they were $2400. even had a hiccup of have the wrong hub configuration (my fault) so got onto MCA and they sent the correct shock ends overnight parts from QLD, for free!  I was very impressed with their customer service and quality of the product
    • They've had some weird failures on their brake actuators. One of them was because they added some kind of lubricant to the factory fill brake fluid that aftermarket brake fluid didn't have so it would affect the seals. Another was just mysterious, probably internal corrosion or something eating away at Prius brake actuators. Parts alone for those are a few thousand USD so not a cheap fix.
