Hey all...

After owning my N15 pulsar for years and considering going down the path of dropping a W10 series SR20DET engine in ive decided to take the easy way out and getting a factory turbo car....

In the long run it will be cheaper and more reliable!!

Im looking at getting a ER34 GTT 2.5L

Im going to go for a drive down Parramatta Rd on saturday and was just wondering if there was anything i should look out for when looking at them, or anything in general that u can tell me bout them

Also do they have any major problems with them in any way or form

Here is a pic of my pulsar for those who may be interested

Thanks for all your help... hope not to be a skyline n00b for much longer!!!

Mick

The main thing i have come accross and ive noticied other people have had this issue aswell seems fairly common. One thing is be prepared to replace your coil packs, they will set you back atleast $500 sooner or later and thats if you change them yourself (they not that hard to change on the turbo r34's however, they are a s**t and a half to change on the non turbo. 3 the one i recently got on mine also found out a couple of other people have had this issue is the 02 sensor will need to be replaced sooner or later, this costs around 50 bucks and from what I can tell isnt that difficult to change if you know where too look. Apart from that I think the car's are pretty solid.

Can you actually get 34's with the standard HID's in them? I thought they were taken out during compliance meaning if you bought from a dealer, it would be taken out?

I bought my 34 from a dealer and it came with Xenons. its a NA R34 Sedan

Oh okay. I just assumed that because most dealers compliance their cars, they would've taken out the HID's and sell them off. Usually when you buy private, the previous owner could've changed them back.

I'd recommend the coil packs also.....I've had people giving me the "I'm looking at a car $500 less than your one" bollocks...need to keep reminding them that the coil packs *will* die and it's a pain in the ass job to do on both Turbo and N/A R34's (having done both models)

R34 stock turbo's are a little fragile, I've seen many a turbo let go under not really excessive conditions...180km/h in a stock low K car recently saw the exhaust wheel in the cat (lucky as I was just about to buy the turbo)

Xenons are great also :teehee:

Buy my car lol

when looking at an r34 check around the rear middle brake light (on the back of the boot) for rust... when looking for mine i found heaps of 34s with rust in that area.

and of course make sure the car is straight and has good paint otherwise you will be forever kicking your self when washing your ride and you find anoying little scratches and dints.

also as mentioned the factory xenons are great if you can find one with them...i was lucky.

+1 for the xenons. I bought mine from the dealers and they still had them in.

Yeah, check the body, namely engine bay and the boot area, make sure that none of the panels have been replaced.

One other thing which i should have checked with my car were the tyres. They gave me great tyres on dry, but when its wet its a whole different story.

I don't if anybody agrees, but i tried to buy a the car as stock as possible and preferably first aussie owner. Again I think its just my pedanticness (spelling). Some people prefer buying from a dealer, some private.

I did an NRMA car check as well.

rust around the rear middle brake light is fairly common for R34's, but it's not too much of a major issue for most. Just need a new seal around the light and a little bit of rust fixing.

Yep, i had to change my coilpacks, mine died in the ass. Went with Splitfires.

got my 34 more than 2 yrs ago with 36,000kms on it.

at 40,000kms replaced O2 sensor

at 105,000km replaced cracked top tank

at 108,000km replaced alternator

Apart from that, everything has been sweet! Coilpacks are still fine :P *touch wood*

Oh and I have the factory xenons too... They are a must!

    • It's kind of interesting - They definitely do builds that split the difference between what they like and what will generate views and engagement. The NC Platform always surprises everyone in a good way, in an uncomfortably good way some may say. They could throw a LS in there and arguably have the best (and best performing) car of the entire stable. But that isn't necessarily what draws views, because people viewing don't want to accept the vegetables of a LS NC MX5 being a superior vehicle in every way (including fun) than a RB26 240Z. This is also why there's not a lot of content about the GR Yaris (on the web in general). They're too good, yet 'only a Yaris' The community doesn't want certain cars to be as good as they are - to beat their hero cars, and I believe the NC MX5 is absolutely one of those cars.
    • Yeah - My key still does the chime thing. I followed the procedure but it didn't activate on the (identical) third set of keyfob that I had. I vaguely remember the alarm saying you can only pair two keys with it. Now that I've dug it up, it appears that you very much can pair keyfobs to the alarm system. (which are the fobs I use to unlock the car). I have successfully diverted the thread and can probably not use the OEM keyfob ever again unless I use the aftermarket alarm and attempt to pair the OEM keyfob to it. Which might just work, or not :D. I definitely used the nissan method and not the aftermarket alarm method.
    • What makes it worse is that Nissan made keys in the same style, for example R34 and Stagea, but they work at different frequencies or something like that. So they look the same but the remotes are not interchangeable. I learned that from some guy selling aftermarket blank keys.
    • Does your door chime work when you have the key in the lock and open the door? I've had that disabled because it's f**king annoying and it is one thing that messes with the pairing. Because now the car doesn't detect key in ignition anymore and the slide-key-in-and-out sequence does not trigger the pairing mode anymore. The service manual has a section on the various bits involved in doing the syncing. I presume it'll be similar between Stagea and R34.
    • Agree, but meh, I think is is based more on LOLS than actually apples to apples, like, who would have thunk a turbo 4 cylinder would not beat a NA 4 cylinder  I think with just basic N/A mods, like a exhaust and tune, it would be equal to the Mini in its current form, maybe I know my current 2.5 would "chop the mini" as the midrange now has a night and day difference in power delivery compared to the tuned 2.0, by around 20kwatw and 30nm from around 2k rpm "ish"....... I'm kinda hoping that they do a N/A build, either with the MZR 2.0 or with whatever they decide to use If I recall correctly they did talk about K swapping one a while ago
