I have a series2 r33 skyline, current mods are

- 3 Inch stainless Steel exhaust

- POD

- Power FC and Controller

- Apexi Boost controller

- Front Mount

- New Big Radiator

- Fuel Pump

Its tuned at around 190 – 200kws.

Im looking at putting a new turbo on it. Ive been told the standard internals would hold up to around 300kws, is this true?

If it is what im thinking is getting a turbo that is capable of making the 300kws then getting you guys to down tune it to a very safe 275-280kws. Would that work?

If yes what turbo would you recommend to do this job? And it’s a daily driven car so id prefer less lag the better.

I also will be getting some deatchworks 555cc injectors when I get the turbo. Is there any other supporting mods you would recommend also?

And if i was to bring it to you guys what kinda cash, roughly, would it cost?

This is what they came back with....

The RB25 in std form will kope with 300kw at the wheels provided it has been kept well. The injectors your are getting will be large enough and we can supply you with a Garrett GT30/40r turbo machined into a std rb25 style exhaust housing, this gives good responce and the potential of running 300 at the wheels, The turb is $ 2100.00, you will need a spacer and longer studs to fit it to your exhaust manifold $ 90.00, a braided oil feed line and coolant fittings hose etc and drain fittings etc $290.00, we will need to modify your intercooler pipe to turb and also make a 4" air flow meter to turb pipe $ 360.00

Labour to R&R turb and manifold refit with new turb $ 450.00, Extra will be charged for broken manifold studs etc and exhaust manifold gasket $145.00 ( genuine)

this set up will give you 270-280 at the wheels with std cams at 18 psi boost, aftermarket cams will be required to push further with out boosting up more

What does this sound like to you guys?

This company is well respected and will do a good job. Great people there so in no way having a go just dont know as much as other people will on here about it and not sure if that sounds alright.

What other turbos would you recommend and cost?

And remember that is with all labour etc

You'll also need a better fuel pump and clutch.

The w/shop sounds like they know their stuff and are reasonably priced.

Don't for a second think that "anything under 300rwkw, is going to keep your engine safe". The only thing that keeps the engine safe is your right foot and how often you mash it. You are going to be making twice the factory output, so now you're playing a game of Russian Roulette; some engines are built (from factory) stronger than the norm, others a little weaker; that's why all manufacturer's have "tolerances" with all parts, it's how the combination of these tolerances come together, that dictates the strength of a std engine. 300rwkw is a loose guide: i have seen 'lines thrashed to death with power under 200rwkw. My car was making 269rwkw, when a piston decided to develop 4 hairline cracks, whilst circuit racing at Calder Park, but i had already factored/budgeted for an engine failure as i knew it was only a matter of time, due to the stresses placed on an engine whilst racing.

If your mechanic is stating 270rwkw at 18psi, how much psi will require you to get over 300rwkw? Using pump fuel (98-100ron) i wouldn't go over 20psi, even on a built engine, and you wont make an extra 30rwkw with 2psi more boost. On a std engine 18psi would be my absolute limit, unless you have budgeted for a rebuild. It may be worth going slightly bigger turbo, to make your desired power figure more easily (ie: using less boost)

BUT: I wonder where you plucked 300rwkw from. :D

Is it just because it's a nice rounded figure, and you'd like "bragging rights"?

Have you driven a 300rwkw car?

Even at 250rwkw a 'line can be pretty tail happy.

Oh yer forgot to add i have a new fuel pump cant think of the brand off the top of my head...

And clutch is on the way out so yer thats going to be done at the same time....

Only driven my skyline at 210kws and only shooting for around 280 as thats the most ill be doing to it and wont be going any further so might as well push it to what it can take. Dont wanna upgrade again... But any advice is good thanks!

Also whats the GCG like to the turbo they are offering?

If you cant afford the rebuild, dont chase the power is the golden rule.

Be happy with 250rwkw and a much increased chance of it hanging together

As for turbos, mate there are a dozen good threads out there now.

Posts from users like Disco/Dale/Mafia/Cubes in all their threads about what has been tried/failed and so on.

Do them the justice of their write ups and read their threads, so much great information :teehee:

ok here is a nice option,

Garrett GT3071r $1600 internal gate from CRD croydon racing

water & oil lines $300-$500

manifold spacer $60

new hoses maybe-$100-200

full days labour unless you do it yourself

Full retune on Power FC

provided your supporting mods are adequate you should make somewhere between

260-290rwkw depending on what boost you run maybe 18psi

This is a rough guide but close to what it should cost but always budget $1000+ for those

just in case situations..

reali do need some help... i dont know enough to know what will do what and how laggy etc... and every shop says something different etc... :):D:D

    • Impossible to remove the housing while turbo is installed on the manifold on the engine. So I have to do it anyways. I plugged it so there will not be any debris in there. Will vacuum aswell 
    • would a r34 gtr hood line up with gt/gtt stock fenders? after latch, front bumper and hinges are swapped for gtr ones? or would the fenders be too low or high in relation to the hood surface? ( I believe seeing somewhere that gtr front fenders use some type of riser for the sides, but do not know how that relates to stock gt/gtt fenders.)    
    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
