just out of curiosity. im no mechano. it could easely be a stupid question.

what would be a faster car around the track. our v8 super cars or a jgtc GTR?

why? and by how much?

i know the 32 destroyed the competition back then  . but what about now?

have they both raced on the same curcit? what were the times?

different rules, difference style of racing.

supergt teams have 2 drivers, and both drivers must drive during a race. during pit stop only one action can be performed at one time.

so

-driver exit the car

-new driver enters the car

-fuel the car

-change the tyres

so u can not change the tyres untill the car is complete fuel, normal pit stop times for supergt cars in the 500class is around 30seconds.

also supergt have alot of aero-dynamics

different classes with different rules

i don't know the specifics but you can't be sure that they all have the same rules to abide by, they can't possibly be compared in their highly modified yet merticulously restricted to regulations trim

its like comparing apples and oranges

Some mag i was reading a few years ago, think it was speed, said toyota tested the supras at PI, and they were about 10sec a lap faster than the taxi's

I remember reading that exact same mag, it was definately SPEED. I think it was in 2005. They had a special on an Aussie driver and in the article they stated the JGTC supra was 10 sec faster per lap on the phillip island circuit during testing. So yes I think its safe to say they are significantly faster BUT the V8 supercars competition is a very different typre of racing - there differenent regs to be adhered to.

Sorry but I would want to see a lap sheet from a timing system to believe the supergt cars are 10 sec quicker around phillip island

super car has 100+ hp more

supergt weighs less, has much better aero

but now way is there a 10 sec difference. 2sec from Shanghai sounds more like it.

Well one of closest thing we have to Super GT cars here is the Sports Sedans. On some circuits some of the cars lap can lap quicker than the V8s, and on other cars the V8s still hold the record for sedan lap times. There is only a couple of seconds tops in it though. I suspect you would probably find a similar story if the Jap cars raced a V8 supercar.

Otherwise all you can do really is guess.

I actually met James Courtney last year and actually asked him about it, he used to race supras in jgtc (not 100% on this but think he also won an award for being the fastest overall driver in one of the seasons??), but races a ford V8 supercar now for jeld wen motorsport, came second this year in bathurst i'm pretty sure?

anyway, from what he said, they tested the jgtc cars at qld raceway once in the off season, and they were about 10 sec a lap quicker than the v8 supercar times. so they are pretty quick, but it's not really a fair comparison, they are completely different cars, built to completely different rules and regs.

Even the V8's now are pretty quick, if you have a look at the current V8 times around bathurst etc. you'll prob find that they are quicker than the group A r32 gtr's.. race car technology has gotten a lot better since the early 90's i guess.

Still would be great to see more makes fighting it out, instead of just fords and holdens..

just my 2c!

Sure cage design has improved, data acquisition helped the cars lap quicker over the race distance. But most of the gains in lap time has been purely because of tyres.

Japanese GT cars are not even in compliance with the FIA GT cars. Last time they did that they got beaten by the Europeans and Americans with thwir Mclaren F1, Corvettes etc etc (in various classes) So the Japanese have their own class of GT cars which means they are not as readily able to race against the Prodrive Astons etc etc which is a real shame as it would be great to see them running at Le Mans against the Vettes etc.

It makes me giggle when ppl wrongly say that local Touring Car regs were changed to ban the GTR, when the truth is a few years later the Japanese turned their backs on the FIA homologated GT cars as they were gettign beaten by the Europeans. But to their credit, they tailor their class to suit their local market, ppl dont want to see 350Z getting beaten by 7.0L pushrod Vettes ;)

back to 10 seconds faster around Phillip Island.....

just looking at PI Track records http://www.phillipislandcircuit.com.au/upl...gust%202007.pdf

Supertaxis 1.33

If a GT500 car is 10 secs quicker that makes it 1.23, and faster than:

F4000 (and outright) 1.24

Formula 3 1.27

Sports Sedan (fastest tourng car) 1.31

Superkarts (lunatics) 1.32

Formula 5000 1.31

LOL..ok stay with me here...

GP bikes do 1:29s at PI , V8 Supercars do 1:33s as Duncan pointed out. So thats about 4 seconds slower over a lap of fast flowing track.

At Sepang the best quali time for a JGTC in 2006 was 2:00.6, a GP bike will do a 2:01.3. So about 1 second quicker then a GP bike at a high speed track

At Twin Ring Motegi the GP bikes do 1:45.8s, where as in 2005 the JGTC cars were doing 1:46s, and in 2006 the JGTC cars did high 1:44s/low 1;45s. So at a more involved track the GP bikes are as quick

So if a GP bike is doing 1:29s at PI then its not a hige leap to say that at best a JGTC car may be 2 seconds quicker then a GP bike, more like within a second.

So, that means a V8 Supercar would be around 4-5 seconds slower then a JGTC, no way the JGTC car will be 10seconds quicker...NO WAY

yeah i was just putting it out there i wouldnt trust a magazine lol

I do wish the taxis where modded to the same level tho and had to use an engine from something they are producing.

Ie holden with their new 7.0ltr v8 and ford with their 4.0 inline six turbo

Also dont know if its 100% true but holden shouldnt be able to run ford parts, ie the diff :S
