Hey guys,

Just picked up my car today and im wondering what the procedure is with raising the boost in a 34 GTR V-Spec. It's got a cat back system on it and i presume i just need to buy an electronic boost controller and then raise it? Anyone know what the standard turbo's can handle on them? i believe they are steel wheels. Thanks for any advice!

standard turbos are ceramic wheels and you shouldnt put any more than 1 bar through them. if you have N1 steel wheel turbos, they can take about 1.4 bar.

the GTR's have a boost restrictor you can remove to see an instant 1 bar without the need for a controller, but you may want to get 1 to have more control. There should be a guide on how to remove the restrictor somewhere in teh DIY section.

The R34 GTR does not come with a boost restrictor and because of this runs a bit more boost in standard trim from the factory.

With a cat back exhaust and a good cat you will see you'll be running about 1 bar with the standard setup.

The R34 turbos are ceramic exhaust wheel but they seem less prone to failure than the older turbos. They are ball bearing for a start so aren't so reliant on oil pressure to keep them from exploding. In fact too much oil pressure is a bad thing which is why they have restrictors in the oil lines.

Your turbos are definitely NOT steel wheeled.

As for raising boost. I ran a single solenoid Greddy Profec B Spec 2 or something on my 34 GTR with not too much drama. Very cheap EBC that one and if installed and setup properly will do a fine job.

They are steel compressor, ceramic exhaust or vice versa. Can never remember which way around it goes. Either way they are better than the 32/33 turbos but still not true steel wheel turbos.

The factory ECU has a boost cut at 1.2 bar so that would tell you the safe limit of the turbos.

The Blitz boost solenoids are generally considered the best of the plugin aftermarket controllers.

Thanks for the info and the corrections! I am going to go for a Haltech e11v2 ecu for the car, with all the boost being controller through that unit. I've been told they are a great thing and will drastically improve the cars performance with a couple of supporting bolt on mods. Anyone have any comments about this idea? negative or positive? any feedback appreciated!
