Gday,

Ive had an R30 4-door l24e for about 6 months now (aslong as ive had my license) and my dad had it for a few years before than.

Shes in great condition and my dad has done a fair bit of work to keep her going and we look after it well. I feel that the R30's are really being phased out (half way between the transition of being bogan mobiles to classics). And this one has done around 340,000 with completely stock/original everything. Im torn between either selling it for chips (Probably $1200 at the most) or trying to hold onto her for aslong as i can.

My dad bought it at an auction about 2 years back for $900 and since than we have NEVER had a single problem with it. It uses minimal oil and all the electrics are good. If theres anything to complain about theres a bit of gearbox noise in certain gears and when the clutch is out, which i hear is the thrush bearing (some comfirm that?). It has rust but the only bit is in the boot lid which could be replaced with moderate ease, no other rust anywhere else.

The problem is I know that if i sell it the only people that are going to buy it is a dickhead thats going to thrash it or someone else that will neglect it. but if i choose to hold onto i just dont have the income to do the work/modifications i want to.

Just wanted some advice or reassurance from some of you older/more experienced blokes about what to do.

Anything will be appreciated, cheers

EDIT: Heres the pics

hey dude

im guessing its an aus spec R30? not the dr30 iron-mask import?

at the end of the day if you can't afford to keep it, you just better of selling it and hoping that the new owner treats her right.

I would be interetsed in seeing some pics, as i had a import spec dr30 4door, with fj20, and love it but had to sell it because the engine die ;) and i didn't have any time to fix it :(

yeah mate its an aus spec one. Use to have the shit Aus/NZ r30 lights (Pretty similar to Pintara lightys). But dad imported some from japan from an HR30 and we slapped them in.

I think this car easily has another 50,000 km's or more in it, as as io mentioned earlier the only problems are the thrush bearing and rust in the boot.

because the dash is from a dr30  meaning the car is just begging for an fj20 swap

ps i didnt kill it ... lol

That is the dash that all series 2 R30's had in them. Mine is the same.

Current engine spec with the L24 on LPG is 194rwkw.

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
