In Need Of A Timber Floor Installer (carpenter?)

Hey guys

I will be stripping out the carpet in my new home to install timber flooring. I can't say I know much about it but am looking for a tradey who would be interested in the job. Will get the exact dimensions once I have a look at the floor plan. The job will involve a living room and 4 bedrooms including stripping the carpet. I found the floor I want however if the installer can give me a better offer on parts, I would be interested.

So if you are interested or have friends who do it, please let me know. Also, I want somebody who is experienced and has done this many times before.

It's not too hard to do yourself, if you could be stuffed.

I'm on my 4th place now and have done all of them with my old man. A bit of elbow grease is envolved, but the care you take with your own work means it comes up much better than most tradies I've seen.

If I could take time off work, I would be happy to do it, but no chance in the near future.

If your interested to see how it's done, my place is out Liverpool way, and we'll be working on it this Saturday.

Mines on a concrete slab so we've layed (nailed - this is the hardest part) plywood on the slab, and are starting to lay the actual boards this weekend.

Oh, forgot to add,

Most places that supply the timber would be able to install as well, or at least point you to someone.

It is quite expensive though, more than likely upwards of $50-$60 per sq meter, and thats without prepping like removing the carpet. Also alot of places run slats rather than full sheets of plywood which can cuse the boards to warp over time. (this is only if they're being layed on top of a slab)

Ask to see houses they have done previously, and check the gaps between the timbers, as this will tell you who's a quality tradesman and who just bangs it together. Make sure there's not massive amounts of putty between the boards to fill the gaps.

my dad wants to do it coz hes done it before, but I don't know if I should let him coz hes known to not finish the job he starts lol. I'll just go get some quotes over the weekend and see what the best prices and quality of work is and see if its worth paying or DIY.

what kind of floor is it? c/crete slab or bearers and joists?

are the bedrooms upstairs? if so, what kind of flooring system is it (same as q1)?

what kind of timber floor are you looking for? the panel (cheaper) style which comes pre-laquered and pretty much is pieced together on site, or timber floors that are ACTUAL timber strips with tongue and grooves?

just need to know because the guy we use to do our timber work doesnt do small jobs.

hey dude I'm not really sure on any of the details of the floor. I found timber floors the colour and style I want and they're going for $24 per sqm. They have the tongue and strips so you just piece them together, and apparently without using glue or nails to join them.

at least I know my dad is not a carpenter and I can expect him to not do a good job so its a managed risk factor, hence if its not a job well done, I know I will have to pay a professional who knows what he is doing to fix it up - therefore I will not let him do it in the first place =)

just be careful of that cheap stuff. it tends to start squeaking and/or come slightly loose after a while if its not (at least) glued. we dont even use the cheap stuff on the houses we sell because of how crap it is/looks.

also, depending on what kind of flooring system you have you'll need to lay down a layer of timber sheets under the timber flooring. then all of your skirting will need to be re-done because of the extra height of the timber floor. look into it.

yeah faux timber floating floors are not always a good idea. $24m2 is very cheap. Installation will probably cost more than that.

since I know its a risk and I am aware that the person doing the job may not do it well, or even f**k it up pretty badly, I know whether to take a risk and get them to do it or get somebody else to do it who knows how to do it properly in the first place, so complications don't arise costing me quadruple to fix by somebody who knows what they're doing. Something along those lines =)
