Air Pod options

Hi

I am wanting to put an air pod on my skyline and I have been looking on the takakiara site. Trust and Apexi are fairly cheap on there.... can anyone recommend? Is there any difference between the pods shaped like a ball (Trust) or the flared cylinder shape (apexi).

Also - I know I will need an adapter - can I just buy a generic one? Or do I need to buy the same brand as the pod?

i have a (Monster brand pod) it seems fine its a washable foam type my son has a HKS one and that is good also so its mainly a price thing i think my one cost me $40 approx fitted with the adaptor

if you want it to filter the air properly get a apexi pod or a K&N...dont bother with foam based ones they only protect you turbo from rocks the rest goes in..

as far as pods go most people seem to recommend K&N. I've also read that foam filters let anything smaller than a bird through. I'm sure there are people on here who know more than me though.

apexi ones are meant to have the best filtration but they are not to be cleaned i guess you can just run it under water dont know what they recommend...but k&N just get the recharge kit, you can clean it easy and then just reoil it...good as brand new..

i have had mine on for about 12 mths no problems so far as the supra doesnt have a grill or anywhere for crap to get into the engine bay anyhow . i take the headlight out for the drags to get more air flow-

i can only comment on what i have used i wasnt recommend anything

have used the Trust AIrinx The bigest one they have yellow in colour standard, made good power but they filter quite well for a foam pod they have three differerent layers of foam which help..but i probably stick away from foam....blitz make pods so do other brand depends whats in your price range too..

go the apexi, it bolts straight onto the AFM, and come with a bracket to secure it to the engine bay.

or you can buy my old k&n and the stainless steel adapter for $100

I got a $25 Hurricane Filter (from works auto) and a ~$30 adapter (from a 94 wrx) from Revolution RaceGear, combine that with about $10/sheet metal and I have a very efficient Cold Air Induction system....

Boo to all you people that pay a few hundred for a POD!!!

i got a copy blitz sus power pod, bloody loud! but does the job and it was $120 including fitting and everything secured by to brackets! hehehe it's been flow tested and is exactly the same to the real blitz filter even down to filtration rates!

Redline GTR is right. The foam based elements have only a ~75-80% dirt retention rate - the stainless steel mesh type elements stop even less. Go for a K&N if you want your compressor blades to last. You're looking at about 150 bucks for a new K&N and adapter.

shame you have to get a pod at all. I reckon the good ol K&N panel element can't be beat for value. Keeps the cops off your back and won't stop you making excellent power.

I have an HKS mushroom, and whilst I agree that they trade filtration for increased flow, I must say, It gets pretty bloody filthy with small shitty dirt. So, it must filter some smaller-than-bird particles.

I wouldnt take it off road though!

One thing to remember when you get a pod is that if you don't make a cold air box for it then you'll more than likely go backwards in power.

That's due to the pod sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

Cold air boxes can be made pretty easily and are worth the time.

I've recently gone from a HKS pod filter (in a cold air box) back to a stock airbox with a high flow filter so I can coment on a direct comparison.

The pod did give me better throttle responce but I very much dought if it gave more power over the rev range. I certainly couldn't feel more power - or should I say a reducion in power when I went back to a stock box.

The reasons I changed back to a stock box was cause the induction noise was anoying me, and I couldn't be bothered with the risk of a defect (yes, I'm an old fart !! )

I would personaly recomend getting a high flow panel filter for the stock box, and also remove the wadding stuff that is in the top of the stock box (for better flow). This will give you a slight induction noise (but not loud) if that's what your after.

Snezza, a hi flo panel filter is just that: a higher quality, higher flo panel filter (cotton rather than paper). It is also reusable, meaning that you can wash it and reuse it.

Redline hi flow panel filters are made exacty like the K&N ones but are cheaper. Makes a big diff from the paper one.

the bushman airbox is indeed a very over-rated piece of home-kit.
