Hey every one yesterday night i went for a drive in my r32. I recently had some exhaust mods done so the exhaust was lower then usual. Unfortunately my car is sitting alot lower then the standard ride height because of my coilovers. I was heading down Kwinana freeway and got pulled over by a police officer. He said he saw sparks coming off my exhaust so he gave me a yellow sticker on the spot. Was just wondering what does the western australian pits look for when it comes to vehicles. Is a Catalystic Converter a must or you can get away without one? Obviously ride height is one. i know i cant have a screamer dump pipe fitted. But what do they look for when you go through the pits. Are oil leaks a major concern?

Your car has to mechnically working well, your entire car must have a 100mm clearance all the way including your exhaust. There is a list that they go through which pretty much covers almost everything from window tint, to secured pod filters, to secured batteries and so on!! When you go through the pits they will give you the list to fix and you have 28days as i remember to fix them, if you can fix it in that time you simply have to go over the pits again to get a later date! OoO and it also costs you $$$ everytime you need to get the inspection!! Good Luck Mate, hopefully they dont pick to much up!

Rather go back a few times till you get it sorted rather than get it unregistered. Costs bulk to go through the registration process and is a real pain in the @ss. Try get it all sorted first time though :D

PM kermit about your exhaust. He can probably modify it to sit higher for you... and yes... you need a cat.

yes im going through the process of getting my car registered as it is unregistered, need stock parts put back(suspension etc),cat is a must, i would not let it get unregistered keep it registered and just try getting it through the pits (if your car is mechanically a1 there shouldn't be a problem) its just if you have aftermarket gear would be easier getting through with stock parts.

* Need a cat

* 100mm minimum all-round

* Plumb back the screamer into the exhaust

* Make sure there is no fluid leaks from your car

* If you don't have any permits & when they look at your car they think you should have, you will need to apply for permits & that can take a month. Meaning the yellow will stay, and because they can only give a 3 week extension, you will have to pay again for another re-inspection for a car that has already been passed, just so you can get another extension while you wait for the paperwork.... :D

there is no point deregistering ur car for a yellow sticker. goin to cause you more hassles later. you still have to go through the pits anyways.

yes it costs $80 something to take your car through and they check everything from ur parklights and license-plate lights operating properly, to rust, to steering boot cracks, ur seat belts, ur heater system, ur suspension (how stiff they are), ur tyre wear, and oil leaks.

its pretty much luck of the draw.

consensus is not to go welshpool but try midland or oconnor. dont bother going on a friday cuz every backyard mechanic trys to pass his car that day. rather pick middle of the week like tues or wed.

i'd run through the car, check for leaks, cracks and stuff, and just try ur luck. if u fail u fail. but atleast u know exactly what needs to be fixed.

i passed my 33 at welshpool with alot of suspension mods..

and recently registered my legnum at oconnor.

just raise your coilovers up so the car is high enough (and raise it above 100mm, as they might want to check it fully laden, which means it has to have atleast 100mm clearance with 5 people, etc in it)

degrease the area's with oil leaks and if its still leaking, fix whatever it is!

also, you dont have to take your car for a re-inspection after 3 weeks even though it may take 4 weeks for a permit, you have about a month after the yellow expires to either get it re-checked, or de-register it.. however you cant drive it after the yellow has expired either.

quick question though... why do you need your car so low the exhaust hits the ground? bit silly i think

dude please don't listen to everyone throwing the 2 cents in on this matter they do NOT work for the DPI; albeit they all make good points, but largely you guys don't work for the DPI and are feeding you rumours.

midland is NOT and will NEVER BE appointment only. the DPI are running a trial where owners have the choice to make an appointment, it is not mandatory.

as far as taking your car over the pits. use your brain, make it so that your car IS roadworthy. wind your coilovers up, try to get your cat sorted, if you have no cat, your car can be de-reg immediately, (might not happen but they CAN do that) running no cat is just dumb for the environment dude, they're there for a reason.

as for oil leaks, before you take it to the pits try to clean them up so it's not that obvious

but most important of all, do not hold the notion that the DPI work in line with the police force. a police officer's opinion is not the FACTS that the DPI know.

your best bet, and most official way to go about it. is take your car over the pits in the first place, inform them that a police officer has given you an intermediate work order, but you would like a proper inspection and diagnosis first up so you know what needs work, who knows. you might actually save yourself some time in the long run.

the inspection now costs $80 as your car is over 7 years old and it is in requirement of a full inspection, this takes a little longer and the inspector will check everything in accordance,

it's more expensive than it was 4 years ago, this is because for years DPI was charging $40 for inspections when RAC were charging 80, they have put their prices up to be in line with the RAC to slow the demand on the DPI.

best of luck to you, but seriously, if a cop says raise your car, and it's already of legal height, why would you bother? this is why it's wise to go to the DPI first up, so that you KNOW what needs to be done.

Midland are great, make an appointment and it's mucho easy. I had mine booked in at 7:30am on a Friday and I was at work in town by 8:30am.

The first time you take it over they give it a full inspection (fine toothed comb deal), I thought I was going to get a HUGE list but it was only 4 items long and those items were pretty easy.

Unfortunately my motor decided to have oil pressure problems before I could get it back over the pits so the sticker expired on Friday, Licensing said I have about a 4-5 week grace period before they do an audit and send letters out to people with expired stickers telling them to hand their plates in, apparently you then have another 15 days to get the plates in. Hopefully get the engined fixed this weekend and book it in to Midland pits for next week :D

Sorry for feeding rumours of what is happening with mine, right now. Does "not, and never will be", apply to what the situation is right now then? Sorry for the confusion, as I thought the fact that last time I was at the pits I was talking to 4 people who had been to the Midland that morning & then told to go to Welshpool or O'Connor as they didn't have a booking. Yeah you could get lucky, or you could just be wasting your time.

correct me if im wrong, but arent forums there to provide other people with personal experiences? fine we dont work for the dpi, but i seems that u dont either, so what makes ur "2 cents" worth more than any one else who has posted their experiences and is just simply trying to help a fellow forum member out?

Also they arn't rumours mate people have gone through the pits and these are there experiences, it may help in a way it may not the person wont know till they take the car down to the pits but members are supposed to post there experiences and thats all thats going on in this thread no need for saying people on here are dishing out rumours, when all they are trying to do is help a member out.

Personally I wouldn't take a shot that I'll be seen as a walk in at Midland, bookings are there for a reason.. so everyone with a booking will be seen first and if they're already booked out, touch sh!t. Off you go to Welshpool or something which by the time you get there is probably chokkas and you have no chance of getting over there that day either.

even some of the centres that are appointment only seem to be quiet the times i've driven past and there are 1 or 2 cars... and thats why welshpool is always so busy now because every1 goes there.

also you have to remember that all the inspectors are different, i've had 3 different inspectors in the 3 months of having my yellow .. lol .. and they've all picked on different things, even tho they should just stick to my original list! :no: your car might be low, 1 inspector might care, the other doesn't have time to care...

actually i did work for the DPI up till a few months back when i was put onto another assignment

i didn't want to sound like a boorish oaf even tho that is what i came across like, i owe you guys an apology no doubt... i'm incredibly on edge after i caught my missus (now ex) doing something she probably regrets now over the weekend.

NO dpi is appointment only, that's policy. it has to stay that way until review in june 08

that said, and as previously stated, they are running booking trials

there is a possiblity they were full booked therefore couldn't take walk ins

so it is wise to get a booking.

as i said, be wise, ring them, make sure u help them out.

the reason they might not look busy is cos they are booked tho, meaning people aren't lining up

it's a lot harder on inspectors now because now they HAVE GOT to do a massive inspection, and police are just sending any old thing thru, this chokes up the system, and because the wages budget is so tight they won't put more staff on therefore it just gets to be a more n more choked up system

that said, they all cbf being too harsh now so they can be pretty lenient

98% of the police should have to enrol in a compulsory mechanic course or something... just so they know what they're talking about! if you got told you had a nice turbo on your supercharged corolla you'd b pissed :no:
