Unstable Back End!

Recommended Posts

I have a R32 GTST with stock suspension.

The car used to handle fine. It know seems to jump/hop side to side when going over very small bumps cruising at 110mk/hr.

It feels very unstable and like you have no control. Someone told me maybe wheel bearings?

Any ideas? cheers

There's plenty of components that could be helping out there.

It does sound suspension related if it is ok unless going over bumps.

Might be time to change the bushes or something like that.

Pretty cheap if you just install pineapples to make it tight again.

Check for wet or oily patches in the general area around the subframe.

If it isn't suspension related, perhaps something simple like a tailshaft bracket has come loose.

Or it could be something dodgy like your exhaust is hanging loose.

Either of these rocking at high-speed would amplify the effect of the wobble.

Depends what you are feeling. Wouldn't hurt to take a quick look to rule these out.

You should be able to give it a decent overview yourself - from gearbox back.

Try and shake everything by hand and if anything moves, that'd be the first place to start.

Once the initial check is done, best to get it onto a hoist and give it a proper look, especially if it is influencing hi-speed control like that.

Should be easy to rule out wheel bearings if you aren't hearing the low hum noise at high speeds.

If you drift, then who knows.

Might just have to take the trusted mechanic for a spin and see what they think.

Oh - Does it feel like your suspension is bottom-ing out ? Perhaps just need a new set of springs, or if there is oil running down your shocks, perhaps time to get a new set of those.

Hope this helps.

Seriously just take it into one of those pedders suspension checks... Cheap and your not obligated to have any work done afterwards.

Probably the quickest way to find out what the issue is because as above it could be numerous things.

Thanks PappaDuck for all your help.

I can rule out anything being loose now.

The car has got pineapples.

When I think about it more I think it is suspension related.

The front end has to tendency to bottom out going over bumps and makes a loud bang noise.

If i remember corrrectly it all seemed to change after one drifting eposide. Mates have told me the rear tyres look wobbly and it kinds feels likr that a bit aswell.

I'll put it on a hoist and see if i can find something wrong with suspension.

mine is doing the same thing. are you hearing a sound like something is hitting something else. like metal to metal, my left rear strut is blown and as soon as it went out mine started hopping left. its scary feeling. check and see if your struts are good. im replacing mine and ill let you know if it fixes it. also yeah what are pineapples

Mine was slightly loose; turned out to be the subframe bushes.

Was good for a while then started getting really loose and getting mega rear end steer when hard on the acceleration.

Hicas rack was stuffed; fit lock bar all good. :teehee:

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
    • They do that at random every now and then, with almost no detectable cause. Mine has done it a couple of times (over 25 years!!). Never worked out why.
