Hi everyone I’m hoping someone out there might be able to shed some light on this.

I have noticed since yesterday that when I’m driving my car I can hear a wired wurring sound coming from the engine. The sound is from 1500rmp to about 3500 rpm to 4000rpm. When I open the bonnet with the car running and rev it sound like its coming from the top of the engine. The car is a 1991 R32GTR. It has got 155000 ks on the clock, Timing belt has be change at the 100000k service. I have been using motal turbo light 10 - 40 since owning the car but have changed only recently to motal v300 10 - 40. Car has a power fc with standard fuel system. Turbos are Garret Gt 25/60R on 14.psi at 280kw.

sound travels in an engine bay, u say the timing belt was changed at 100k, what about the tensioner and idler pulleys, they have a habbit of being noisy, even when new, get a long screwdriver and put the but of it hard on your ear and put the other end around the engine, avoiding moving parts obviuosly and try and pinpoint it, i use a stethoscope but a screwdriver should work if it's long enough

The tensioner and idler pulleys were changed when the timing belt was changed.

I did try the screwdriver trick on top the rocker covers and i can hear the wurring noise.

I had the exact same sound after belt, idler and tensioner change. What type of belt are you using?

I used a Gates; people say they are a little nosier.

I used a standard belt when I got mine changed.

Yesterday I to my car to a reputable performance work shop and was told that the noise that I was referring to is "my clutch fan is not working a t full capacity. He said that when the fluid is cold the fan has to work extra harder pulling air."

He also mentioned that the air out side being hotter will cause the fan to work harder.

I asked if I need to replace it and he said not straight away as its still working ok.

Sounds odd. They usually fail by locking solid, not "working harder" as your mechanic said. Rip your fan off and start the car... if the sound goes away, its the fan ;)
