Hey guys,

I was wondering if u guys had any experiences with both or either of these turbos. I have an rb20det running on a gts4 r32 with splitfire coilpacks, sliding performance highflow turbo, mech boost controller, k and n pod, 3 inch exhaust from the dump back, remapped ECU, fuel pressure reg, fuel pump, gtr gear box, exedy HD clutch pulling 160 kws...... and i am now looking for more! :) as expected! i am thinking of a bolt on turbo or a kit. My aim 220kws at least with good responses..

I have done a bit of a search and some research and i understand that the short stroke and big bore many the rb20 lack tourque down low however my current turbo doesn't start pulling till 5000ish........ :nyaanyaa: very disappointed

opitions:

1. trust tdo6 LS2 G20 8cm

Does anyone know were i could source one of these kits and approximately how much? $

2. GT2530 and make excellent response but just make my power goal

3. Garrett equivalent?

Does anyone know were i could source one of these kits and approximately how much? $

in addition, i was thinking about getting new injectors and a electronic boost controller but would the injectors work with a remap cos i haven't got any ideas or the extra 2000 for a new ECU

Tired of waiting for boost! :w00t: or should i find a shop and supply a rb30 block, rb25de head, forgies, and rods and a 4wd sump adapter plate and be done with it!

PM Roy on these forums, he has a TD06 on his rb20 and it's an animal. It's also alot more responsive than a GTRS, on an rb20, and makes more power. Keep in mind; that Roy's set-up includes a high mount manifold and ext. waste gate. He occasionally thinks of selling his set-up, so shoot him a PM.

HEy Al,

Yeh i have read his post... his tdo6 is insane but i was thinking depending on how much a kit cost i probably spend 4.5 to 6 grand on building, fitting and tuning an rb30!@ problem being i can't build an engine! no idea how it is done!@ :nyaanyaa:

let me get this right, you have the highflow and a remap along with supporting mods and its only making 160 rwkw? the current turbo should be good for 200-220 rwkw easy.

i suggest finding another tuner!

I am unsure! maybe it was at all four which won't be that bad from an rb20det! but i think the decision is make.... find a rb25det stagea engine and drop her in with a modified loom and look at that tdo6. asian auto spares and stz auto have stageas cuts that just arrived! :nyaanyaa: this should help me break 220 kws

1.) GTR and GTS4 power figures don't change much going from rwkw to 4wkw.

2.) Search for threads and posts by user CEFFIE. he has an R32 GTST (rwd) with same turbo as you, remapped ecu blah blah.. currently has an RB30 in there but when the 20 was in there, he cranked out 242rwkw on just under 20psi.

3.) RB30, built by someone else, for a GTS4 does not equal cheap. $6K will only get you the block, head, machining and putting together. turbo, ecu, injectors, afm, etc etc will all cost extra.

The Stag half cut would probably be the ONLY way that you can get a responsive GTS4 for cheap.

sorry but 1450kg and rb20 in stock form with stock turbo which is on full boost around 3200rpm still feel slugish, let alone a modded one.

My choice would be to sell and buy a different car.

but if that was not a choice, I'd go the stag engine route, bolt all your bits (turbo, fpr, fmic, k&n etc etc)

I'd say since someone else will be doing the work, this will come to about $6K'ish including engine purchase.

THEN...

sell your re-mapped stock ecu, your RB20det for gts4, RB25 turbo, the 2 bovs you have, splitfire coil packs (don't think they fit the rb25), etc etc... you should make some money back so all in all, it will cost you between $4K - $5K.

RB20 from the GTS4 is not as common as the rwd ones.

and the rwd ones can't be used in the 4wd ones.

so you might get more for it.

OR

you could strip the engine completely and sel lit in bits.

this will get you even more money.

I bought a "dead" rb20 for $400 about 4 years ago.

when I pulled it apart, it had 1 burnt valve lol..

After selling all the bits and pieces seperately, I made $2300.

then gave the bottom end away cause no-one wanted it.

You can push 220+ if you had injectors & Z32 the only really limiting factor is your turbo but you should still see 200ish with that.

If you stick with the 20 whilst getting 550's, Z32 and the TD-06 then you will walk 220kws in :nyaanyaa:

dont forget peak rwkw (or 4wkw) isnt that only thing. his gts4 (i own one too) weighs a bit more and despite having peak power, midrange and lowdown torque is gonna be needed moreso.. who's gonna be up in the 5000rpm+ range their whole trip..

yeah I had an R32 GTS4 for a while with a 2510 on it.I know just how gutless they are till they get on boost. Its pathetic, little corollas run off the lights quicker...till the boost comes..Seriously though I would save my cash and get an RB25 out of a stagea...it bolts straight in and that extra capacity is there when you need it most. You will never get low down torque from an

RB20

Thanks for your input guys. It is really about design at the end of the day. I mean lets face it i have a POOR mans gt-r! all the braking, handling, etc with out the kicked out guards and the 2.6dett.

I could get injectors and z32 (would this work with a remapped ecu?) and maybe pull 200-220 with my current turbo or i could get a tdo6-20g 8cm exhaust with a ex gate and manifold and just crank it! i know the rb20 is a lag monster at the best of time but i love the REVVVVVVVVVVVVS! :(

but i have called mercury motorsport and asian auto spares soo its all on a roll. AAS have an rb25det 4wd auto front cuts ($2200 - gearbox, ecu, loom and block) and mercury reckon they can modifiy the wiring or rewire so at the end of the day there goes my $6000 from tax last finanical year and my revv machine! i think i will go the whole hog and put the 25 in with z32 and a tdo6-25g 8cm with ex gate and i should be happy with the power figures! i konw its only a figure on a dyno but i have been in 260wks cars and I lIKE IT!

GTR and GTS4 dont lose much goin rwkw to awkw?? i beg to differ

i lose about 30kw goin from rwkw to awkw... and thats normal. u always lose going awd to rwd especially when it goes through something like a torque converter for a transfer case

people have posted back to back results if you feel like searching and reading it.

There isnt much drawn when there is no power being transferred.

Are you sure about this? Wich version, the standard, or s, sh or l2?

Not sure what you mean by "Wich version, the standard, or s, sh or l2" :)

Yes i am sure: The comparison was done on two std rb20 motors with different bolt-ons, on the same dyno, on the same day. The graph shows that the GTRS lagged the TD06 all over the rev range.

I have even driven the two cars (at different times) and the difference is very noticeable.

    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
    • There's a huge reason manufacturers are tuning in dead flat torque curves... Make them reliable (and more drive able)
    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
