hey guys

so i blew my turbo on my r33 at the start of last year and got it replaced with a stock r34 turbo and its been running fine ever since..

but now just after this weekend, wenever i accelerate and hit boost almost everytime i get this really really loud siren noise coming from my turbo.. and its not just a little whine or anything either.. its a massively loud siren like noise like ambo/police siren.. and people stared at me wen i was driving to work this morning thinking ive got some siren sound im playing on purpose or something.. lol

anyways i have no idea wtf is going on but my guess is ive probably f**ked my turbo again.. :(

oh and my cars pretty stock.. running stock psi.. no fmic etc..

any help appreciated

thanks

jenna

I just blew my (stock) turbo (on stock boost) casually driving home at normals revs and speed. I limped it to my mechanic, and when the heard the "whizzing" noise mine made when I revved it, he instantly said the turbo is dead.

Hope you have some savings!

thanksss for the replies :D

so i got it towed and its going into the mechanics later this week.. doubt its completely dead but it may be on its way out.. anyway good chance to upgrade which i was planning on doing soon.. hopefully something can bolt straight on.. hmmm about that.. anyone know what turbo does? does a t28?

My friend had this (siren noise) happen to his R33 Series 2 turbo. We're pretty sure that it was a bent shaft at the compressor end and the Nylon comp wheel hitting the housing.

Time for another turbo :P

I think the fins are chipped or cracked in your turbo... if this goes, you have no choice but to replace it... damn, a mate had a similiar problem... it's more like a high pitch tone then anything else.

I got the same sound when i installed my 2535 a year ago...siren sound was loud as!! i checked and rechecked everything on the intake side of the engine and all was good...funnily enough...the sound went away when i got a resonator welded onto the exhaust...this was done for a differenct reason but it stopped the wailing...so for me it was probably some sort of resonance through the pipes...and it wasn't the turbo dying...its run 1.2-1.3 bar for a year since then and its still ok...

Take what you will from my experience...i'm not saying its definitely the cause but it was for me...

Had this happen to me, a bit of the exhaust wheel chipped/came off and unbalanced the shaft, so was the lovely sound of the bearings eating themselves :P, i didnt want to accerlerate anywhere, so embarassing. Lucky i had already bought a GCG R34 highflow for $2k off the SAU forums :D, it even came with braided lines plus all the other bits.

cheers

Ive had the siren sound for a year now on a hks turbo.... had it rebuilt twice cos i though it was broke but its still there.... it went away briefly with a new higher HP tuned eprom (the turbo induction sound went really quiet and the siren sound dissapeared but the car went way harder)

then the siren came back after i did an engine swap (done to fix engine oil leaks) which also brought ping ping caused by timing issues at higher boost....

EMS now installed and getting tuned on wed so if the siren goes away im gonna put it down to engine specific timing setup in conjuction with afr's somehow.

I wouldnt worry unless there is shaft play or blades touching the housing......

the siren sound is much different to the grinding sound of blade on housing

Limpus: some of the 25 series HKS turbos like to make funny siren noises, its jus the way they spool.

Spunky monkey: I've had the mosquito whine from a turbo but i've also had this full on siren noise. It has to be heard to be believed....very freaky stuff haha.

Yeah...i put it down to some weird resonance through the pipes or something like that as it only happened after i put in the original HKS dump pipe...then at a later date i get a resonator welded onto the catback and then the noise went away...

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
    • Probably gonna remove manifold and turbo. I’m not sure if I can get M12 x 1.5 air tight. Could use high temp Loctite 246 or something similar, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s just best to remove everything again and weld an 1/8NPT on there instead.
    • Yeah, saw the ratios, not impressed. Would like the punch I have in the first gears now. With those ratios it won't be the same.  Also want the h pattern gearing, or at least a quiet gear set that don't need to come apart for service each year. Looks like the only "reasonable" way Is a 8hp70 transmission, but where is the fun in that🤷‍♂️
