Are 285's Too Wide?

I have 18" rims for the 180 but the rears are 10" wide with -15 offset so they would fill the new guards. I was told that 275's or 285's would be to wide for the weight of my car and most likely give less grip than a much narrower tyre. Something to do with the weight being spread over too much area. I was going to fit semi slicks most likely only the Falken RT615's which only go up to 275 in the 18" and not a true R compound but better for light daily driving and occasional sprints. Is this true, it did seem to make sense when the tyre bloke was describing it and if so will it be considerably worse?

I would rather do sprints etc and i'm probably the only person with a 180 that does not give a shit about drifting. This site seems to have more adults who do track work than fully sick drift kids so I didn't bother posting on NS.com. Thanks guys.

I reckon they'll be too wide, as in with such wide rears and comparatively narrow fronts, the balance of the car will be ordinary.

I would stick to a max of 265 and try and go for 235 on the front.

It is possible to 'over tyre' a car, and I reckon for such a light car a 285 rear would be overkill

I'm sure someone with more of a technical answer can help :P

well if you have too much rear grip vs front grip, the car will have a tendency for understeer... similarly if too much front grip vs rear grip, the car will oversteer.

of course this is a generalisation, as the suspension set up makes a huge difference to the car behaviour.

Ok thanks mate. I am most likely going to buy Sydneykids suspension package so hopefully that can help. I noticed that a lot of expensive cars and even cheaper sports cars have a large difference in sizes front to rear. I'm trying to build myself a poormans supercar lol.

I have a 180, currently run 215 front 235 rear- although i also have a heavier RB25 up front as well.

I run a dunlop semi slick and it needs more grip at the front- I've run out of adjustment with camber -3.2 front and anti roll bar.

I would suggest at least a 235 front if you can fit it and maybe 255 rear

I am waiting for Sydneykid to compete the S13 track kit. I have his full road kit on my R32, it's just brilliant

I run -1.5 camber on the rear and its just not enough at QR- could go up to -2.0 rear would like to dial in 4.0 on front but out of adjustment.

Thanks mate, yeah running 215's with the RB25 would make it tough when going hard. I was planning on running 245's up front. I didn't realise that the rt615 and the 595rs didn't come in 285 so that doesn't matter anyway and will probably have to go with 275's in the rt615.

I didn't realise that Sydneykid didn't have the track kit for the S13 yet.

Is 245/275 still to much everyone? Will running 265's be worse for grip/handling than 275/285 on a 10" wide rim?

SK may well have it finished the kit, as I've been in the USA for the last 3 months, i haven't had a decent look, if he has, sweet, ill get it when i come home in 2 weeks!

The 215 do ok on the track, i just don't have enough neg camber, need to change the lower control arm mount for more neg camber.

i run 245/35/18 on the front and 285/40/18 on the rear of my R33 and have used them with slicks and semi comps with no problems.

Interested to know why stray so far from stock in outer diameter on the rears. Why did U get 285/40R18 instead of 285/35?
