I am in the market for a new car, and while I'm not planning on starting a family right away - I would like to think that the next car I buy would be "family friendly". Now obviously there's no shortage of room in the stagea, but what I'd like to know specifically is if the stagea can house a baby capsule legally - ie, all the correct mounting points and such. Does anyone here own a stagea with a baby capsule in it? Where there any hassles?

Cheers,

Josh.

there is a member on here with the handle of 3InTheBack - for a very good reason LOL

The S1 stagea has 3 mounting points on the roof of the cargo area, and 3 holes for 3 more on the floor of the cargo area behind the rear seats

The wagon is great not only for the ability of fitting 3 car seats in the back (3intheback) it also allows for mountains of stuff in the boot. When the missus said we really needed a wagon, this was pretty much all i would look at, along with the Legacy.

In saying this though, the rear seats don't really have as much space as you'd imagine on a wagon of this size. And I keep rubbing my pants on the rear wheel when i put my little one in her seat, black marks on the pants just before going out isn't a good look. The wife does the same so i'd be interested if any other people have that problem.

well i have two in seats that are mounted to the roof and im hoping there may be an addition to our little family next year and with two there are no issues and obviously with the twin pram in the back there is plenty of room for everything else....:)

i dont actually have the problem with the black marks on the pants though

I suspect it might be cause we have the seat in the middle and have to lean in somewhat to get her in/out. The wheel cleaner stuff just marks anything that brushes the wheel so easily!

We have 3 seats in the back of our Stag, 2 boosters and one front facing cap. Plenty of room, Phil&Ted E3 and a stroller in the back, along with shopping, no rubbing issues on the wheels. We have the 3 mounting points in the rear of the roof with no need for extension straps. I've looked for these 3 mounts in the floor and can't find them in our S1 (had all the boot trim out when removing the Kenwood sat-nav system). They may be a S2 thing.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Greg.

  • 9 months later...

We actually sold our '99 Corolla and decided to get a larger car as we couldn't get a hand space between the capsule and the front seats (technically, this is what's recommended)....

but the Stagea is no better! We really should have checked this factor out before purchasing. I guess I assumed a 4.8m long car would have a bit more rear leg room than it does! Oh well, if nothing else it was a good excuse to upgrade to a nicer car! We do have heaps more room in the boot for shopping/prams/stuff and once our baby is big enough to sit in an upright, it won't be a problem anyway. That, and it's just such a nice car it's hard to be dissapointed with it in anyway whatsoever.

mine has a panel type thing behind the rear seats that lifts up, mounts are under that?

But by using the mounts in the roof, you don't tie up boot space with straps, especially when slotting a pram in lengthways! And I can slide an 'E' size argon bottle in lengthways next to the pram! Good for TIG or aluminium welding!

Hi Steve, I'm in Emu Plains if you're interested, more than welcome to have a look.

Fire me a pm if you like. Mine is a nm35.

Cheers, Dale

we run 2 baby seats in either the 4WD or the Stagea (M35). Didn't need an extension strap as the standard one reached the roof mounting points easily. There's mountains of room in the back for 2 kids and an adult between them. It's actually much easier for the toodler than the 4WD as he can easily get in and out himself, the 4WD is easier for the baby as you don't have to bend as much to put the Bub in.

I will be experimenting with this over the next few weeks/months aswell as we have a little boy due in a few months and will end up having a newborn in a capsule and 2 others in chairs...some how im thinking its going to be a little bit tight :)

Steve, if you'd known about and attended the massive Stagea meet we had on yesterday, you would have seen probably half of the Stageas there had baby seats and/or capsules in them.

The M35 has an extra ~9cm gap between the rear and front seats which makes quite a difference both for passenger legroom and also the baby capsule.

I have a baby on the way (due any day now actually!!) and have had the baby seat in (facing the rear) behind the front passenger seat. Fits perfectly and there's still plenty of room in the front. My brother who has the same brand of baby seat had no extra room when fitting his in his ford falcon wagon so i think the amount of space in the M35 is fairly standard as wagons go.

We found the middle seat would not support the baby seat in the rearward facing direction because the seat belt strap was too long where the buckle is so it couldn't tie it down enough.

Either side is fine though and the strap reached the roof mounting point just fine. Had it checked by the ambulance people and certified and all so the stagea can definitely do it.

Our baby seat is a "safe n sound" brand for those interested - i think this brand is one of the longest baby seats when in the rear-facing position.

Having owned a s2 stagea before, I do feel it would be a much tighter fit in those, although maybe the middle seat would've worked better in the s1 & s2?
