Hey there.

I just bought some Cam gears from my local Mechanic. They are a no brand item. Althou im not sure if i should keep them now as my engine already has one cam gear on the exhaust side ( looks like a old school japanese cam gear - Unknown brand, and made of of normal steel. No fancy colours of anything) But it has no markings on the gear like my new ones.....

Can someone shed some light to what benefits id get with these.

Otherwise i will have to try return them.

Appreciate it

doing cam gears as an alone mod is kind of silly, theres a fair bit of labour involved in just installing then as they have to take the whole front of the engin off (if u do decide to go forward install a new water pump at the same time to save money and a timing belt) after the half a day ball park to get them in its bout a day to dial them in and u dont really gain power you can just move it earlier in ur rev range

its a mod thats best done in a stage like, cam sharfs, cams gears, timing belt, water pump, head gasket, valve springs then a days tuning.....

Mr 4 post would benefit from using the search button :(

Generally most people do the most powaah rewarding PER dollar mods first.

Powah: Extra power from adjusting relative cam angle varies on mods and of course… the cam profile being adjusted. As mentioned, your usually moving the power band up and down the rev range, not "necessarily" making more power.

As such, they're more of a high level tuning tool

Cost: Total cost of mod includes many hours on a dyno with a good tuner to get the most affect from timing changes. (heaven forbid your tuning a SR20 who's gears sit under the cam cover)

As per always, your decision depends on your use for the car. If just throwing a bunch of light mods at it, sell the gears. If your going to be changing cams, turbos etc and want to spend $300 - $500 on dyno time, purely on cam gear adjustment, then keep em.

Use the search button to see the results of others tweaking setups that costly match yours.

PS: Their visual appeal diminishes when you put your timing cover back on... which you'll be doing to prevent a stone from getting under the belt... wont you :)

Cheers

I had a set of adj cam gears fitted to my gtr when I had the waterpump + timing belt done. The standard gears had to come off to replace the seals so didnt cost any extra to have these adj gears fitted.

A few years ago I had the exhaust gear changed on my gts-t and it cost me $200 fitted & tuned and was the best money I ever spent on the car (closely followed by the front/dump pipe).

$300-500 in dyno time is absolute BS. Go to a tuning shop that knows RB's and they will get the settings 90% accurate before the dyno is started just from previous experience.
