This is the first japanese car that truelly goes beyond the 206kw barrier

Ironically, the first Japanese car to have a higher than 280ps published engine output was some people carrier. I can't remember which one.

Maybe nissan pulled out the semi slick trick again? (runs off to put on fire suit)

Nissan have seemed to just go after the 911 turbo. I dont get it.

I think everyone is forgetting some things about acceleration.

Firstly, the kw figure is MAX kw, which wont make that much difference when talking about 0-100km/h times, and more difference when talking about 1/4 mile times.

The acceleration has a lot to do with torque (which determines how quickly it reaches max kw), gear ratios, diff ratios, and also weight, and the rubber on the tires.

The porsche happens to be better on torque, reaching 620 nm by just 1950rpm, but this still doesn't tell us enough.

Some engines rev higher and more quickly than others, so there's no telling if the porsche will reach 1950rpm before the GTR reaches its max torque at 3200rpm.

Anyway, my guess is that the diff ratio and gear ratios of the GTR are set up for much faster acceleration than the porsche. Nissan traditionally use very high diff ratios and this could be getting the GTR off the line quicker than the porsche. Higher diff ratio means the engine revs quicker/wheels turn quicker, and the turbo is on boost quicker.

Either way, it doesn't really matter which is better in a straight line. I seriously doubt the two cars are in the same market and will attract the same buyers. The Nissan is quicker on a circuit due to a better AWD system and better handling/quicker cornering, and yet at the end of the day, people who want a porsche will buy a porsche, and people who want a GTR will buy a GTR. I dont think there are too many porsche buyers who would consider buying a nissan, and vice versa.

i think someone (with patience) should find out how much quicker the gtr shifts than the porche. then times that number with amount of shifts the gtr does around the nuburg. when you add that up minus that from the gtr's time.

i think thats why the manual was'nt brought out right now??

maybe a manual r35 gtr wont beat the porche 911 around the track??

anyway its a GREAT car just like all the rest of the gtr's

Its aimed directly at the 911 turbo buying market. They are compairing every single thing on the car do the 911 turbo. The marketing ploy is to sell it for half the price, which is basically the value of the porsche badge.

Another thing is, have nissan just gone out of their way to beat the porka on the ring? As in, it will beat it on the ring, but no other track, as thats all nissan went after, as thats what the marketing department said to do. (obviously the race cars are a different story, they arent the same car)

They tested it on other tracks too, like laguna seca. Also i have seen times for the 997 Turbo around tsukuba. It gets a 1:04, thile the GT-R gets a 1:03.

To put this into perspective a mclaren f1 also gets a 1:03

call me a cynic but I suspect NISSAN's marketing dept also 'engineered' their performance figure CLAIMS to be just a bit faster than the Porsche 911 turbo, which isn't their flagship performance car anyway. The only actual test so far got 4.0sec 0-100 which is slower than the Porsche.

I call bullshit. where are you getting these figures from? what gumby was driving it?

McLaren F1

467kW/630bhp

650Nm/480 ft-lbs

1140kg

laws of physics are not on the GTR's side. GTR has over 100kw less power and well over 500kg more weight to lug around!

Mclaren F1 - Tsukuba Time Attack

EDIT: Actually i was wrong the Mclaren F1 gets a 1:04:62, so its actually SLOWER than the new GT-R

yep, dud driving. how many mis-shifts? And certainly wasn't very agressive picking up the throttle. it looked alot higher and softer than I would have expected too! and talk about pitching under brakes! yuck.

not really surprising that it wasn't being pushed too hard with them being made in such small numbers. I'm sure the owner gave strict instructions not to bend his irreplaceable car.

Its funny, but a couple of people (some who can drive, some who can't) have criticised the Mac One's handling. Apparently its floaty at high speed, and does roll around a bit.

Back to the DSG gearbox maybe having something to do with it... Obviously not the same cars, but it is a good example.

The Golf R32 is a true sprinter. Coupled with a slick 6-speed manual transmission, the V6 engine takes the R32 from 0-100 km/h in a stunning 6.5 seconds. The R32 can also be equipped with the optional 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which allows super-swift gear changes achieving 0-100km/h in just 6.2 seconds.

So thats 0.3 of a second just do 100kmh. Going around a 22km track, thats got to add up to a lot.

Having owned a 03 996TT for a good part of 3 years and driven it as it was supposed to, its clear why Nissan is making its comparison. Engineering brilliance. The TT is a formidable car, rightly so due to its cost, but it is truly a liveable supercar, that can be driven day in day out, and thrashed at the track on the weekend without being upset. In today's market its all about compromise. The 997 is still awaiting a true DSG gearbox, which is something porsche engineered in the early 70's but its weight has been the biggest issue. I know im patiently waiting for a vspec version to be released....or pick up a second hand 997gt2 in 18months time :D

The GTR is the new affordable true supercar without doubt.

v-spec vs gt2, now THATS a battle worth watching out for!!!!!!

    • So, more pain. The FAST manifold is a little larger than the stocker. This is problematic because there really wasn't much clearance to begin with, so going from 'barely enough' well into 'no' is sad based on the external dimensions of the thing, even though where it bolts to the head is the same. Result is the fuel rails sit a good 25mm higher, and this is a bit of an issue with the wiring that runs behind the motor, and the fuel lines, and everything else. When pushing the manifold on, it required a huge amount of force to crush wiring looms to fit it, sensors like the MAP sensor are about 1mm from the firewall, and the FPR just has to bend ABS lines to be forced into place. After some brainstorming and some sad drinking, the loom for some reason ran from the grommet behind the ABS sensor, then to the driver side head, then back to the passenger side head. So all of this was pulled back and stripped, a few wires cut and rejoined, so that the 'branch' was now on the passenger side's head as below: Before you basically couldn't see anything behind the driver head. This is much improved! The MAP sensor is now pointing up (instead of at the firewall) Brackets have been made up for the rail. The rails are for a LS1, the manifold is designed around a LS2 as it's base. Which of course has slightly different bracketry and water pump clearance, hence the mods people need to do. Should be hopefully mounted tonight. I spent money on a new FPR that is slightly more compact than my Turbosmart FPR1200. The gauge has also been moved to the rail. There's also apparently an ORB to AN Union instead of the adapter, because the ~25mm of the current adapter is going to make the difference. Provided this all goes together and arrives today, it'll be the totally not stressful attempt to start it.
    • This seems like a pointless exercise. There is no E30 availability. Ongoing availability of E85 should not be assumed. Flex-fuel is the only sensible approach, so you can use E85 when and where you can get it, 98 when that's al you can get, and anything in between as you fill it up and drain it down. And if that means replacing the pumps, fitting a flex capable sensor/ECU/whatever has to be done to these Renault shitboxen, then.....so be it?
    • Sorry, I wasn't very clear.....just that the standard injectors are apparently good over 600rwhp/450rwkw which you won't get to on standard turbos anyway.....they are much better sized from factory than we are used to in RBs.
    • I'm not sure where you are, but United Terrey Hills has E85.
