Aha! I had this exact same problem. I am fairly sure yours will be the same.

What mine was, was a small metal bracket on the pads which detect when the pads are getting low. I'm not sure if it's meant to connect some optional electrical circuit and thus give you a warning on your dash as to when they are worn out, or if you just have to rely on the squeal that they give when touching the disc. Either way the warning system works well, when you know what it is!

My metal brackets were a little too far in for my liking (about 2mm of pad left) , so I pushed them out a bit so that they would go off again at 1mm or so.

My new pads don't have these metal brackets, so I'll see if I can remove them from the old ones and re-attach them in a semi-permanent way.
