I opened up my catch can to give it a clean and I was surprised to find about 50mL of what seemed to be oily water.

Although I would say there would have been 95% water 5% oil with a oil and fuel like odour. This is the first time I open it since installed about 8K Km ago.

Has anyone experienced this?

Is it a catch can with a filter on it? If so then i would say water from either washing the car or from rain has gotten through the filter and into the catch can.

If it is a fully sealed catch can with just lines coming into it then ummm that aint good...... :)

haven't had oil/fuel mixture in a catch can before but have seen it in a mates car when i done a service for him. he had a coilpack stuffing around for a bit before it shat itself. all the unburnt fuel from that dodgey coil was going straight down into the sump. and it looked like what your explaining, "oily water" with a fuel smell.

Well ill be damned, that's actually a pretty good explanation of what it most likely is.
