I agree, but there is probably a transverse vs longitudinal engine installation argument. You could reasonably argue the Audi arrangment is a bit of a blind alley.

Lancia 4WD was introduced roughly the same time around when Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth got into production, both turbocharged.

Dick Johnson with his Sierra was leading the bathurst, ahead of Mark Skaife in his Nissan GTR, despite the fact that Sierra is a mere 4 cylinder and the GTR obviously with a RB26.

Having grown up with these cars and even having the original sales literature from 1988 for the sierra cosworth, these cars are what forms my basis of opinion (sierras more so than escorts) on the 32 GTR in the other thread. These cars were formiddable and can certainly rattle a few people still. A guy from my home town has the fastest sapphire cosworth in the world at just over 200mph so there is no doubt they are animals. Mine was only about 270bhp but enough to enjoy.

Sadly though these cars, even the youngest bar a few exceptions is about 10 years old now and require a fair bit of cash thrown at them to keep them in good nick.

I have stacks of Ford and Cosworth magazines, brochures, pics etc so if you want to test your knowledge, let me know :P

BTW - You have posted a German one on Rondells and the original sales brochure image. Couldnt you at least find an English one!

But hell lets ignore all the restrictions, weight penalties, etc, placed on the GTR, to try and make the field more competitive :)

The RS500 Sierra Cosworth was a longitudinal engined rear wheel drive car built for touring car racing. It was the evolution version of the Sierra Cosworth (hence the RS500 tag) and was introduced at the end of the 1987 season.

In rallying the appropriate antecendent for the Escort Cosworth was the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth. Which had the same engine but with an AWD system. It was a rally car. It was introduced AFTER the track version.

The Escort Cosworth shown in the first post shared a great deal with the Sapphire - basically the entire drivetrain with an Escort body shoe horned onto a cut down Sierra floorpan.

The Lancia Delta Integrele first ran in an 8V form in the 1987 season - so it predated both the Sapphire & the Cosworth Escort.

Not all correct sadly.

The RS500 was supposed to be because it represented 500 cars being built for homogulation, however only 498 have ever been sighted and where produced in a combination of Moonstone Blue, White and Black. The RS500 as a production car was introduced in 1986 on the roads.

The Sierra Sapphire didnt have the same engine, it had a similar one as the RS500. The RS500 had a stronger 200 series block and 8 injectors on the fuel rail. The sierra Sapphire Cosworth didnt have just a AWD system, the 2wd variant that I owned was introduced in 1987 and preceeded the AWD system which commonly came into play in 1990. The 4x4 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth then preceeded the Escort Cosworth. Yes the Escort and the Sierra Sapphire 4x4 shared a lot in common including the floor pan. The Escort Cosworth is larger than a traditional MK5 Escort that Europe saw. :)

    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
    • Thanks @Duncan Ride height is fine. I think it's almost stock tbh. Happy to share a pic. I don't actually have a regular mechanic as haven't lived in Sydney too long. Could you or anyone recommend any shops in Sydney?
