Power Steering Pump R32gtr

hi guys.

Ive recently had my steering rack rebuilt cos the steering was crappy. The steering is still crap. Im now looking at getting the pump rebuilt but i dont wanna leave the car at the mechanics and walk around for a week while im waiting on it to be rebuilt and replaced. A mate of mine has 2 spare S13 pumps that he doesnt need anymore. The question is,

Will an S13 power steering pump replace an R32GTR power steering pump?

Running HICAS still?

Locking it up, and pulling the solenoids can feck with the HICAS control unit. Some say more caster can iron this out. Tomei make a box that can intercept the unit and stop the steering from going heavy. Ppl have jimmied the solinoid on the rack which adjusts steering assist.

the hicas has been completely removed including the solenoid. the line to solenoid got plumbed into the power steering cooler located next to the drivers side head light.

"crappy" steering feeling is when turning a corner in either direction the steering could be light and heavy numerous times in the 1 turn. so light heavy light heavy light heavy.... like the steering is fighting against me but not in a natural way.

i spent almost 45 mins talking to the director of the company that rebuilt the rack and we came up with the idea that maybe there is sticking valves in the pump which is restricting fluid to the rack. this would explain the intermittent feeling and also explain why the steering sometimes comes good. it could also explain why the rack needed to be rebuilt.

I assume the hard/soft solenoid on the rack was looked at / checked?

S13 zero chance. Have you removed the rear vanes in the HICAS pump?

i cant remove the hicas ecu as its the same ecu that runs the 4wd. whats the hard/soft solenoid on the rack? Trent are you talking about the hicas solenoid right? thats been removed along with the lines to the rear steering rack when the lock bar was fitted.

I think you might be a tad confused.

The hicas ecu controls the hicas and the power steering.

The ets module controls the abs and 4wd.

There is a solenoid on the front power steering rack almost directly under the drivers feet that modulates the power assist for the steering. Check that the wiring to this is still good and that you are getting a voltage there at idle.

*edit. Perform a hicas diagnostic and see if there are any faults evident. Power steering goes hard when there is a fault with the hicas system.

ahh yea it just came back to me with the difference. ill run hicas diag tomorrow. the power steering pump will be rebuilt in the new years
