hiya fellas,

Iv just recently purchased a '96 Series 2 R33 GTS-T. it came with 18's, lowered, stereo, front mount, Blitz pod filter, 3.5" cat back Tanabe "jasma" exhaust. Anyway ive had it for exactly 2months now. shes running stock boost etc. i purchased a boost guage and a NON electronic boost controller.

I was told to wait to get them both fitted when i get it dynoed after the new year and after i get a 3" full dump/font pipe/high flow cat. I just had to muck around with things and get all figidy (use to own a VLCT that i used to do my own work to). Anyway the problem developed after i installed the boost guage. The readings are fine. On idle it sits -19 Vacuum and on boost it hits 7psi (no spiking). Now when i started cruising around the block slowly, i could hear the left hand side of the motor wasnt sounding right so i pulled over and i knelt down on the left side of my car at the front where the front pipe is and it sounds like an exhaust leak or perhaps an exhaust manifold gasket leak as those sounds are very distingiushable.

i am totally baffled. Unless its a huge coicidence which i doubt, how could fitting a simple boost gauge cause this? Even with the bonnet up if i give it a few soft revs, u can totally hear somethings not right. Power wise, it feels pretty much the same. the noise comes from the left where the turbs is and im confused and in need of opinions/advice or knowledge from someone who may have had this same problem. any help would be much appreciated.

cheers

is it a hissing sound?

if yes,, i would venture a guess that either the join of hose from the engine, or on the gauge is leaking.

no, not so much hissing, its on the left if ur in the car facing it but outside looking at bay, sound is coming from the right where the turbo/exh manifold is and a bit lower down where the dump pipe is. its more noticeable when driving it. The guage hose is on the left where the inlet manifold/fuel filter side is. come to think of it, it slight hisses on that side but it always does it if that helps?

im stressin a bit cos i know if had've waited to get the 3" dumphi flow cat fitted then dynoed, i know this would not have occured. a bit of the noise came from the head as well. perhaps the cam? its the exh side cam (obviously)

ah wel, 2moro ill just disconnect the guage, have it back to b4 and sees if theres a change. I doubt it. Any other suggestions may help? Cheers r33cruiser

today i removed the boost guage and had it to how things were b4 it started to make that noise. After having done all that, it still makes that sound.

the sound comes from the turbo region and sounds as though as little pebbles are flying around under the heat shield. Very hard noise to describe. It just sounds like an exhaust leak. Its doing my head in. Any other suggestions pls peoples??

When i pull/hold the throttle cable at low rpm, thats when u can really hear it, also the noise extends down the front pipe. 1st i thought a piece of the turbine wheel had fallen off and lodged in between the front pipe and cat but under full throttle on the road, it goes fine plus this annoying ass noise. Idle is perfect, not blowing smoke... what could it be?

Any help would much be appreciated.

sounds like a turbo gasket leak to me! had a similar problem on my old silvia wasn't overly expensive to fix but wasn't exactly cheap!

get all the gaskets changed ie, manifold, dumpipe/flange better to be safe then sorry

    • @GTSBoy yeah i know it was not the "great" idea but it is and option...but i think i will stay on no BoV rather then trying to make it work with "half" this and that. But that GReddy FV2 is cool...i like that you can make it like stock if you want (and have/make the custom pipes) For other thanks! it was alot of information. But for the sound...a dont rly "like" both of them...specialy if they are loud...but if i "must" choose i would rather have little whooosh rather than sutututu with no BoV....BUT that is what is i gonna get. So for the all info i gather. In my case:  No BoV is not that bad cuz it is stock...and iam used to put N/clutch right after rpms are around 1000 so it should be ok...just need to avoid "big" drops. But i do not have the engine in the car so i do not really know how "bad" or good it is. But as i had that little test drive it looked ok. The atmo BoV should be worse car would dump to much fuel specialy between the shifts...so without proper tune/ECU i dont want that. BUT with that...car should drive ok with no problems right? (i do like there is less piping wih this solution) 馃檪
    • Usually an RB20 won't stay in closed loop idle anyway. The O2 sensor gets too cold, stops swinging.
    • They aren't, but it depends on what interests you about an R32-R34. If it's the front engine I6 turbo that tunes well with a manual transmission an E92 335i 6MT is so incredibly cheap. You can get a super clean one for 20-25k USD tops. Put an LSD in it, tune it, have fun with it. If it's the general idea of AWD + turbo and a manual transmission the 996 Turbo is absolutely much more expensive, it's less practical but it's also basically a complete track-ready car from the factory. At least the Mezger doesn't have heaps of oil control issues. And in the US the 996 Turbo and R33 GTR are roughly the same price these days. 996 maybe a bit more now that the hype has abated for old Skylines here.
    • these are not the same
