helps bleed air from the cooling system as that tank is mounted higher than the radiator and all the air is released rather than it being trapped in the top of the head water jackets etc.

These are generally only needed on big power setups and engines that are worked hard on the track

also for large high mount turbo's where the water cooling lines sit higher than the radiator, stopping air from sitting in the turbo.
