Help! Oil Pressure Gauge Issue

Hey Guys!

This may be a slightly long story, but please read because it may provide some clues.

I was on a cruise and basically I cornered too fast (Stupid I know) and lost control and spun out. I wasn't trying to be a smart arse, just trying to get somewhere in a hurry. I was extrememly lucky in more ways than one. I backed over one of those aluminium white reflector things that are on the side of country roads when I stopped spinning (only did 270deg). I feel like an absolute tool and an idiot for going too fast. I tore loose an Earth wire which in turn blew an ignition fuse. This lead to no dash instrumentation and no power windows and best of all stopped my alternator from charging my battery. Once the fuse was replaced, everything was working again. I have checked underneath the car and can't find any damage from the reflector post other than the obvious wire that was torn loose. This leads me to today.................

When I was going to a mates place I noticed that the oil pressure gauge was getting really high when I was pulling high revs. even around 4g on the rev tacho, it was reaching the line between 4 ang 8 on the gauge. It was almost hitting 8 when I was pulling over 5.5-6 g on the revs. I don't think that this is normal, but I can't verify it as I don't know anyone who has a skyline presently. I can't see any oil leaks and the oil level looks good.

I have a S2 R33 which is stock except for a pod filter.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I will probably have to take in to a mechanic (anyone know anyone around the woodville area?) maybe morepowa or some place like that but at least I will have a possible clue as to what I am looking at.

The stock gauges and senders are notoriously inaccurate and can read either extremely low (most common) or in some cases extremely high. Mine does both from time to time.

Get either a cheap mechanical pressure gauge on it to test or shove a decent elec gauge (~$100-150).

Oil pressure too high or too low can indicate engine problems so get it checked out. :banana:

I think from memory that mine stayed relatively constant.

I did notice however it is more exaggerated when the car is cold as opposed to when it gets up to temperature.

any more thoughts?

will be getting it checked out a.s.a.p. though. can't afford a new engine. :banana:

If the motor was cold and your pulling high rev's expect to loose a bottom end in the future.

As a general rule don't give the car a hiding until ~10mins after the water temp has reached normal operating temp as the oil is still cold and thick. Thick oil = less oil flow.

If you loose a bottom end there's a reason for it; either you have given it shiet when its cold, there's been detonation or oil starvation at some point.

make sure you do i was in the same situation than you with my freshly rebuilt motor, everyone kept telling me its the gauge or sender and i didnt bother checking it out, and then my oil pressure light came on and now my engine is out again, so i would suggest putting a mechanical gauge to it asap, and if it is running low oild pressure it might be time to replace it before it does some serious damage. Well worth it for piece of mind. cheers

      Nah, shouldn't have made any difference. Reds on, or car running, should be same same for what you were doing.

      Should be able to source 200 cell R32 cat... unsure how easy it would be to get it to Malta though.

      I've owned a few scooters over the years, a Vespa PX oil burner was my first scooter, followed by a few others, including a little 50cc BeeWee that I used as a barracks bike, and I've had a blast on all of them, they really are the cheapest for of city/suburb transport around The only issue with scooters in Australia is lots of people look down on them due to their size,  maybe they need a big bike to make up for something else where they are lacking, unlike Europe and Asia where every man an their dog owns one, and now that filtering is legal in NSW, local traffic is never a issue Not to say I haven't owned my share of big cc bikes over the years, but they were for more blasting through the hills or Hwy riding where it needed to sit on Hwy speeds Safety wise, I ride like everyone is always trying to kill me, everyone is running a red, or running stop/give way signs, or generally asleep at the wheel, which most people are duringtheir commute, I also ride really safe, and give myself, and everyone else enough room in case I need to pull some hasty evasive actions, I've done a few rider training days over the years, which has come in handy on more than a few occasions  As for mods, there's nothing really, and yes your right about aftermarket exhaust, all you get is loud and obnoxious noises from them, like every 250-300 cc you hear with a aftermarket muffler, in saying this I did put a rear muffler from a 125 Aprilla on one of my old 125 scooters, it was horrendous and no amount of full face helmet and ear plugs would dampen that noise As for coming from the Harley, and what a overpriced POS that was, I no longer do big rides as my poor old busted joints ache after about 1/2 an hour of riding, long cruises are so much more enjoyable now in a car, so a big bike would be pointless
