How To Remove Shifter Bush

Hi guys

I got a short shifter for christmas but the bush it came with (small plastic piece on gearbox-end) is just shit.

I want to install the short shifter but i need a new bush for it. Nissan is closed until who knows when so i need to remove the bush off the original shifter.

Is there an easy way to do this? I tried to twist it off but it wont come off.

any help would be much appreciated

What do u mean by shit , u got to line it up perfect to get it in , what type of shifter ??

when i say it is shit, what i meant was it is cracked and will not stay on the knob on the end of the shifter.

It keeps comming off and getting stuck in the top part of the gearbox.

bloody hell. so i need to wait until the new year until nissan open so i can get a brand new one?

Im not sure they will sell it , if it a after market shifter it might not fit anyway

The knob on the aftermarket shifter is the same size as the standard knob. I just really need to remove the standard brush.

Try putting it let boiling water , if that dont work it not meant to come off

You should be able to order a new bush from repco or burson etc.. for about $10.

To remove the bush from the end of the shifter all you need to do is, place the bush in or above a vice and with a punch or a screwdriver whack the bottom of the shifter through the small hole on the bush.

1. close vice slightly smaller than the width of the bush

2. place bush (upside down, gearknob facing down) on top of the semi-closed vice and let shifter hang freely

3. hit down on the bottom of the shifter through the hole on the bush with a punch, hammer etc.

To put bush onto new shifter, place bush on floor, bench.. place shifter on top and whack it down onto the bush with a hammer.

If you can find a local gearbox mechanic open ask for a toyota hilux bush, they fit perfectly and will cost you under $10.

My local gearbox mechanic had a box full of all different sizes and the size that matched up the same was from a Toyota Hilux.

the shifter is soaking in boiling water right now. unfortunately i dont have a vice.

if all else fails will try tomorrow to contact a local gearbox mechanic

or just get mark to change gears for you he shifts hard enough to knock it clean off without breaking it.

A big thanks to all who have helped me with this.

I put the bush in boiling water and removed it from the original shifter. I then installed it on the short shifter.

Im off tomorrow to bunnings to get some longer screws for the shifter.
