If you can't make 600hp with almost 6 lts without a turbo there is something wrong .

Most stock engines make 100 hp per lt these days without a turbo and I can think of a few that make close to 100 kw per lt .

Get rid of the old pushrod donk and buy a proper engine, with the aid of a turbo you only need half the displacement to make your 600 hp.

current 6.0L HSV's make 307kW- that's a measly 68.5hp per Litre

"most stock engines"? you can count the amount of engines that do that on your hands, and apart from the Hondas, they all cost cubic dollars

there's no way in hell an OHV 5.8L motor can make 800+ flywheel horsepower and be something you'd want to use on the street without being turbocharged, period.

You will be running out of hands, ok not most but lots . Just about all jap bike engines will fit the bill here, what about a 1.8 celica, 1.8 rolla with the same Yamaha engine, the odd Nissan 1.6, a few Hondas, Lotus, just a few that come to mind and all the mega $$$ Euros .

You DON'T need 5.8lt turbos to make that kind of power, unless of course we are talking about 60yo tech as is the case with the Generals old donk.

Ive seen a GT42RS make 547rwhp at low boost on a 355 Holden V8. (was a VR ute....skids anyone!!!)

Used the primary pipes off the genie headers (2 piece). just reversed (right hand side on left bank and vice versa so the face forwards) with custom 2 1/2" 'up pipes and the turbo sat roughly where the factory air box normally is and ran a 3 1/2" dump over the top of the exhaust manifolds and a 45mm Turbosmart wastegate.

Response was pretty good aswell...maybe not spooling at 2000rpm but wouldnt be far off.

Or maybe follow the Gen-TT setup. They make some good power but the heads on Ls1's flow a lot better.

Either Way I hope your not gonna use a TH700!!!

we're thinking about cars ffs. any modern bike that doesn't easily better 100 N/A hp/L isn't worth owning

and we ARE talkling about 60y.o engines. 2 valves per cylinder actuated by push-rods is most definitely 30's/40's tech

I did say stock engines ( cars or bikes) and I gave you some examples of cheap cars....

60yo engine exacly my point , it shouldn't be around, it has no place in todays technology. Thats why I told him to get rid of it and buy a modern engine of half the cubes.

Hmm Pro-Stock Drag Cars anyone......OHV 400 Cube NA V8s that make well over 1000hp and run High 6 Sec Quarters

No Place huh

Whats The Record ET for sport Compact Pro-Rwd.....6.88

dude wants some help modding the car he has- not your opinion on weather he should buy a different car. TT late-model V8 Commodore will prolly make a much more relaxed daily driver than a Skyline anyway

oh, right- and what fuel do they run on again?

idiot

Here I am trying to help a bloke out and im getting flamed.....I Love SAU.....

But To Prove a point.....

Heres the top 8 list a recent pro stock round.

1. Jim Yates, Splitfire 2001 Grand Am, 6.862, 201.46

2. Kurt Johnson, AC Delco 2001 Cavalier, 6.865, 200.74

3. Tom Martino, Century 21 2001 Grand Am, 6.871, 200.23

4. Warren Johnson, GM Goodwrench 2001 Grand Am, 6.878, 201.76

5. Brad Jeter, 2001 Grand Am, 6.887, 200.86

6. John Nobile, 1998 Cutlass, 6.891, 200.20

7. Allen Johnson, Amoco Ultimate 2000 Avenger, 6.905, 200.53

8. Tony Gillig, Gillig Racing 1997 Cutlass, 6.915, 199.40

Anyway Im showing My V8 boganess here.

BTW the Fuel is 118 Octane.

But Anyway I say go the turbo V8 route.

And if your lucky some turbo Gurus will help you out with sizing. or give Garrett or GCG a call they will be able to help you out.

Of course a late model Bommie will make a more relaxed daily than a line .... The more people that think like you the longer GMH will keep on making 60yo engines with pushrods . I have a 4WD wit 4 valves per cyl and no pushrods and the Yanks are still selling pushrod cars??? If we all think like you we would still be driving T model fords !!! Thankfully we don't .

think like me?

for f**k sake this forum is going down the tubes

i've never owned a push-rod V8 Holden or Ford, and doubt i ever will

for the record- every review i've read of the 5.4 DOHC Ford V8 Vs the previous 5.7 LS1 rated the Canadian Chev motor better. Just goes to show even a 4V/cyl DOHC head can be an Epic Fail when you match it to a massively over-square crank design (apart from the super-charged version in the Ford GT)

the fact that people are still happy to buy 2V OHV engines (in monstrous quantities), and do things like- tow boats and drive at 1300rpm in 6th gear at 110km/h speaks volumes about the longevity of 'old tech' in real world applications

anyone else that wants to start a moronic argument with me is going to get E-flamed back to the bronze-age

Sh@un for the record i wasnt comparing fully preped race motors with street motors. I was comparing the pro-stock cars with the likes of Titan Motorsports 2JZ Celica, Gas Motorsports Camry-Dore etc.

But by the looks of it this thread is over.

O.k i'll try and bring this thread back on topic. Thanks to the guys who are genuinely trying to help me out here, there are some great points to your posts.

Now a few facts about my set up,its a 355 fully built with Crankshaft rebuilders tuftrided crank/Eagle H-beams/SRP forgies with 9.2:1 comp/the blocks been decked,o-ringed and runs copper head gaskets with 4 bolt mains/heads have been slightly cleaned up with 2.02int and 1.65exh stainless valves (over the standard 1.94int and 1.6exh) and will have a custom roller cam ground to suit the turbo/manifold combo. It also runs a T56 manual box so hopefully it holds up to some of the punishment.

It would have been making just over 500rwhp on 10psi with the standard intake manifold and the vortech blower and was like a stocker to drive (benifits of the larger cubic capacity and FI is it doesn't need to be wild to make huge power) so i dont think 600rwhp on 14-15psi will be much of a problem with this old dinosaur once the new cam and intake manifold are put on.

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
    • Thanks for sharing this, and BTW if your headlights are in good condition they are worth thousands....you might want to consider replacing them with brand new LED ones like this (https://www.nengun.com/78works/full-led-headlights-r32-skyline) and making enough profit to buy a house in Sydney
    • I'm not sure what sort of shops are nearby, but I'd expect any reasonable exhaust shop could put a cat in it that will not restrict the power that engine makes. Otherwise, if you want to remove it, short lengths that replace the cat are readily available online, search for "de-cat pipes" or "test pipes"
    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all!
