Hi everyone,

I just took my freshly rebuilt car out to the shop to get a roadworthy. The guy at the shop failed me saying there was a bit of oil leaking out from the left hand side of the motor. I drove the car up one street to work, parked. When I came back about ten minutes later there was about two litres of oil out on the road. Before this I was thinking that the motor was getting a bit hot, it reached about 90 degrees, but it's a hot day.

I've looked at the leak and I can't tell exactly where it's coming from yet. It appears to be coming from the front left hand side. The sump bolt is in, it's not on the turbo side, and I don't think it's the oil filter. I poured some more oil into the car, and I haven't started it. It hasn't leaked a drop of it?!?

Does anyone have any thoughts/experience with what this could be?

I suppose I should be greatful that there were actually 2 litres of oil in the car when I stopped.

Cheers.

2l would be a shitload of oil to leak, it was probably a lot less.

make sure oil filter is tight.

check the oil pressure sender is tight too

they are the easy ones. but if you had a shop do the work, easiest is to take it back for them to fix

Hi Cactu5, have you heard any complaints from the builders about your money not working at the bank? If you still owe money that is even better.

If it (rebuild) goes bad & you haven't given the builders an opportunity to put it on a hoist & check it out or given them the chance to rectify hiccups you are basically "majorly screwed" for any future problems/developments/claims.

Take your ship back & get it checked by the builders. Never mind the agro.

My 2c

Cheers & good luck, GW >_<

had a veryyyy similar problem with my bros silvia just yesterday,. turned out to be a dodgey oil filter (or put on wrong :|)

reason i say its similar to yours, is becauz the leak was coming from the front left side hand side (like yours), and would not leak when the car was off, however would leak pretty bad once the car was on.

i suggest you turn the car on and poke ur head under it and watch to see if oil is dripping.

just my 2c mate >_< good luck

i think you need to talk to the builder dont get agro or nasty just explain your concerns and see what happens .

if you go in full of agro you wont get half as far it may not even be the builders fault iit maybe a faulty o ring on the filter or something really simple .and if you go in full of agro it will only make you look like a tosser atm its only a oil leak its not like its thrown a rod thru the block

just beat by the post above

Do you have a sandwich plate for any gauges etc....In my expirence they always leak. Bastard things now i have no Oil temp gauge.

Duncan there would be no oil leak after about 10 secs with that, so......no oil leak = no probs >_<

But as above i would take it back to the shop.

lol although throwing a rod would cause a nasty oil leak....

my mrs had a v6 camry she brought it new and it had only done 120.000 ks in about 10 yrs she babied this thing when a service was due it went in right on the knocker,

i was lucky to even get a drive of it after been together a few weeks i said how about i take ya for a nice drive in the hills in your car . end result it thru a rod thru the sump dumped all the engine oil onto the hot cat and presto one crispy fried camry on the side of the road lol . all is forgiven we are still together 4 yrs later

This is a no brainer mate. If the problem isnt easily identifiable by yourself or even the rwc mech you should of spoken with the engine builder before you thought of posting on here.

Ring them up and tell them its leaked a lot of oil. Ask when is a good time to drop it off so they can have a look. Book the tilt tray and send it down to them.

I'm sure they will happily oblige.

    • The more I think about it, the more I should probably go with a genuine Bride seat and rail set up. But damn the $$$ for a driver and passenger seat + rails!
    • From what I understand, stock internals should hold out for a while even if you run 500 at the crank, no? Especially if you don't run a modern turbo setup that reaches power and torque much earlier than the original twins. My engine isn't unopened either, it has N1 Pumps, head oil restrictor, new crank and cams, new piston rings, ARP head studs and Cometic headgasket along with 2860-5s. Considering everything is healthy this should run fine for a while I assume. Once my engine stops leaking shit everywhere, it'll be tuned to 370 crank first anyway, because I need to legalize the turbo setup. If I end up needing a new engine because my block actually has an issue, even though GTSboy was adamant that the whole porous block story is nonsense, before putting an engine in I'm probably gonna take care of the weakspots.
    • Hah, I have no issues with what you are doing whatsoever! You clearly know what you are getting yourself into. It's just funny reading things like this. "What's that noise?" "Oh, that's normal. That's just the engine not getting any oil. Nothing to worry about. It'll go away in a moment"
    • Yeah I'm keeping an eye on it and might take it out as a once off if this doesn't fully charge. I did some research that said it's normal in equalisation charging. Voltage I thought was 20+ (faulty battery in multimeter) but now its on 15.9v, the max it should go to is 16.2v as per the manual. I'll provide an update once hopefully it's actually fully charged and in float mode. Waiting for it to go to 16.2v and not higher and see what happens. What I suspect has happened is that even though it's not an old battery, I did leave the car turned off for almost 4 weeks at one point then left it off for another 2 weeks which might have erroded the battery and is taking a long time to do this equlisation charge.
    • I wouldn't be using the seats a lot since it's on Historic rego and will not be driven a lot, however I also don't want to fork out 3k for something that won't last. Havent looked at BRZ seats, aiming for something of the same era I did speak to him on the phone once, and I do see your point haha. How many kms do you think you drove before they started wearing out? Just had a look at yours, certainly looking for a reclinable version. The Brides don't look too bad! I would still like to sit in one just to make sure it's what I'm after.    Thanks for the replies fellas.
