Hello,

Can you guys please provide some info on stock times for Series 1, Series 2 & M35 Stageas such as:

1. 0-100

2. 400m / 1/4 Mile times

3. Top Speed

4. Actual kw produced and not the gentleman's agreement of 206kw.

I can only comment on s2 since thats what I own...

1. somewhere around 7-8sec

2. somewhere around 15-16sec

3. 180km/h (limited)

4. I'd go with 206kw. = approx 100awkw for S1, and 120awkw for S2 - very rough estimate.

however all of this info is pretty much useless. There is a lot more to a car than the max power figure and how quick it does the 1/4 mile.

Yes I agree there is a lot more to the car than 0-100 and 1/4 mile, but it is a benchmark most cars are touted to people, Just wanted to see how much each model difffered. 7-8 for a series 1 is pretty good considering a GSR does that.

Agreed as well... I'd like to see the figures done in the wet.

I had some wanker in a ? actually not sure what it was... small and front wheel drive very low and loud. Cut me off... next light I did the boy racer rev at the lights... I think he is still trying to get off the line.

I don't think I have driven such a quick car in the wet that is as big as a Stag.

My s2 had around 100awkw when stock due to an exhaust leak that was hurting top end boost, and yet I still managed 8s 0-100 (measured with a stopwatch from in the car) with 2 people and some luggage in the car...so I'd say thats about right for an s1. I'd expect a fraction quicker from a stock s2 thats running well but probably not 0.5 seconds off. so yeah probably closer to 7.8-8.0 seconds, rather than the 7.0 i first mentioned.

1/4 mile would probably be around 15.5 but that really depends on the driver.

The above times are for an auto as well. Not sure if of times in a manual. Under normal circumstances, the torque converter in the auto allows boost to be kept up during gear changes so the auto tends to be slightly quicker than the manual down the drag strip.

and I'd be guessing the stagea times in the wet would not be much slower than those in the dry. In my last car (nissan silvia turbo) I used to have to go very light on the throttle when accelerating in the wet, not so with the stagea. Have only ever broken traction going round corners in the wet, and even then it was able to pull back into line without any trouble. I've no doubt there are limits however so I dont take it for granted.

Also, back to 1/4 mile times...it seems from what people have managed at drags, that around the 160awkw will put the stagea in the mid-low 14's - depending on the setup. I'd estimate mine to be around mid-high 14's due to the slightly larger turbo. Still a good deal quicker than stock though. :)

I was getting constant times around the 7.5 seconds to 100, 14.8 sec 400m @ 92mph. There was variations of course but it was around that mark. Without grounding the boost solenoid it was around the 8.5 sec mark and 15.5 sec for the 400m.

Would have though S2 would be substantially faster than this, not just because of the increase in power and torque, but also the extra ratio in the gearbox would definitely help acceleration times.

I've done many G-tech runs in my STOCK S1 RS4 automatic, all at nighttime in 20 degrees ambient or so, not loading up the stall, just planting it. (power mode on) and once you modify the boost solenoid to avoid the low rev boost cut, it was amazingly consistent.

I was getting constant times around the 7.5 seconds to 100, 14.8 sec 400m @ 92mph. There was variations of course but it was around that mark. Without grounding the boost solenoid it was around the 8.5 sec mark and 15.5 sec for the 400m.

mmm talking about that low rev boost cut, I note on my M35 stag it is very sluggish in first but then second & third really pick up, I was overtaking and noticed it was doing 140km/h at about 3000 revs which was pretty good. My Evo 6.5 is never sluggish even off boost.

Is this a common thing with Stags, is there a way to get that boost spooling a little earlier, has anyone ever run sequential turbos on their stag.....

pixel8r - PM me about this grounding of the boost solenoid thing. Is it S1 specific or for the S2 Neo as well - might explain a few things I've noticed with my S2 lately...

Anyway, I have an Apexi RSM which came on the car - a RWD S2 RS V. I had to set it up and calibrate revs to speed etc but it seems very accurate in terms of the stopwatch and actual speed measurements. When I have compared it to the freeway odo checks and digital checks it seems 100 km/h indicated on both my RSM and actual speedometer equates to 101 or 102 actual so it may be 'over-accurate'.

Have only done 4 runs but have been very consistent times even though I tried both Tiptronic and Drive. I should say that my Stagea has an HKS ebc set (on high) at 0.85bar (12.3psi), has a GTR33 'cooler and Nismo exhaust, a Cusco Diff, stock airbox and snorkel, HKS BOV and 2 cats (!).

I haven't yet had the road for a 0-400m but I ran four runs with 0-100km/h over two days... all high fives with the best being in 'D', at 5.70sec.

I'd say a stock Neo RS4 would run closer to 7.5 and a stock RSV 7.1, as a guess... I'm more of a 'Tell us what it ACTUALLY did down the quarter' kind of guy so I'll let you know when it comes back from Willowbank. Shooting for low 14's.

Some people say Stag's are heavy and slow but the 220kW 535i is 1535kg (low/flat 14's), the new Aurions are 200kW and 1600+kg (high 14's) and my RS V has over 240kW at 0.6bar (S1 172kW, S2 206kW), and weighs 1540kg (S1/2 RS4 1650kg). People have mentioned RS4's traction advantage in wet etc but with t/c on or off I haven't had any grip or (unintentional!) traction issues - especially since I value my Tiptronic transmission too much to ever muck around with stalling it up or slamming it into 'D'!

Love to know what an M35 with a few mods would do. It's definitely heavier though!

My M35 on the quarter 15.4 was the best I managed. I'm damn sure the car will do a 14.9 with more practise. It is a heavy car at 1720kg kerb weight. Mods to the engine are 3" from turbo back large front mount and pod air which makes allot of induction noise so something to think about iff you don't like that kind of thing before getting one. Myself I like it. 146km/h at the 400m All on stock boost which I think is around 6 or 7 pounds not yet measured.

The boost solenoid trick is covered in the forced induction section from memory (search for "high boost solenoid" that should do the trick).

But you mentioned you're running an EBC so it wont apply to you anyway. The ecu doesn't control boost in any way as far as I'm aware. There is an R&R mapping it will fall back to if it detects excessive airflow, but thats not really boost control.

For anyone else, in short the trick is done by cutting the BLACK wire that goes into the plug on for the stock boost solenoid. Ground the end of the wire that goes to the ECU (not the end that goes into the plug). and tape off the end that goes into the plug just to neaten things up. It would be a good idea to leave a bit of wire on the plug end so you can "undo" it if you later decide to. All it does is set your stock boost at just over 7psi (out of the factory its set at only 5psi until it reaches 4500rpm and then it will up the boost to just over 7psi).

As for losing traction in the RWD stag, if you put your foot to the floor on a wet road, without TC, will the rears spin? because in general the AWD stageas can accelerate in a straight line at full throttle on a very wet road (in pouring rain too) and not break traction. On a dry road/track the difference would be minimal, depending on your power output. It does make more difference in skylines but the extra weight of the stag helps the RWD out a bit. :D

The AWD vs RWD argument is covered in other threads and could only be properly sorted if 3 Stageas, an S2 RS4, an S2 RS4 S and an S2 RS V with same or no mods did a track, drag and road test. Your S2 seems to have similar mods to mine, the main diff being the weight of RS4 (110kg), which may explain the vast diff b/w the 0-100 figures you quote and the ones I have.

As for weight making the car more stable as a RWD in a Stag as opposed to a Skyline, I've owned both and yes, you are partly correct, but it's the Tiptronic 'box more than anything which avoids the 'accidental drift' personality of an R33 GTS-T. Certainly if my car was a manual I would expect to have to work a lot harder (more fun though!) to get the thing off the line smoothly like an RS4 or T/C fitted RS V...

The main reason for this thread seems to be M35 comparo's and from the post by ausis I am guessing that weight still handicaps what should have been an improved performance credential. I'd say rolling starts would be a different story though as the M35 has 400Nm, more than 65 Nm more than a C34 Neo!

Yeah I definitely wasn't intending it as a AWD vs RWD thing. I was just curious to know what life is like in the wet for those on the "other side" of the fence, thats all. :yes:

back on topic, M35's do have more torque but it seems that is countered by the extra weight...

however on paper (and otherwise) they are an awesome car. :D

    • First up, I wouldn't use PID straight up for boost control. There's also other control techniques that can be implemented. And as I said, and you keep missing the point. It's not the ONE thing, it's the wrapping it up together with everything else in the one system that starts to unravel the problem. It's why there are people who can work in a certain field as a generalist, IE a IT person, and then there are specialists. IE, an SQL database specialist. Sure the IT person can build and run a database, and it'll work, however theyll likely never be as good as a specialist.   So, as said, it's not as simple as you're thinking. And yes, there's a limit to the number of everything's in MCUs, and they run out far to freaking fast when you're designing a complex system, which means you have to make compromises. Add to that, you'll have a limited team working on it, so fixing / tweaking some features means some features are a higher priority than others. Add to that, someone might fix a problem around a certain unrelated feature, and that change due to other complexities in the system design, can now cause a new, unforseen bug in something else.   The whole thing is, as said, sometimes split systems can work as good, and if not better. Plus when there's no need to spend $4k on an all in one solution, to meet the needs of a $200 system, maybe don't just spout off things others have said / you've read. There's a lot of misinformation on the internet, including in translated service manuals, and data sheets. Going and doing, so that you know, is better than stating something you read. Stating something that has been read, is about as useful as an engineering graduate, as all they know is what they've read. And trust me, nearly every engineering graduate is useless in the real world. And add to that, if you don't know this stuff, and just have an opinion, maybe accept what people with experience are telling you as information, and don't keep reciting the exact same thing over and over in response.
    • How complicated is PID boost control? To me it really doesn't seem that difficult. I'm not disputing the core assertion (specialization can be better than general purpose solutions), I'm just saying we're 30+ years removed from the days when transistor budgets were in the thousands and we had to hem and haw about whether there's enough ECC DRAM or enough clock cycles or the interrupt handler can respond fast enough to handle another task. I really struggle to see how a Greddy Profec or an HKS EVC7 or whatever else is somehow a far superior solution to what you get in a Haltech Nexus/Elite ECU. I don't see OEMs spending time on dedicated boost control modules in any car I've ever touched. Is there value to separating out a motor controller or engine controller vs an infotainment module? Of course, those are two completely different tasks with highly divergent requirements. The reason why I cite data sheets, service manuals, etc is because as you have clearly suggested I don't know what I'm doing, can't learn how to do anything correctly, and have never actually done anything myself. So when I do offer advice to people I like to use sources that are not just based off of taking my word for it and can be independently verified by others so it's not just my misinterpretation of a primary source.

    • As I said, there's trade offs to jamming EVERYTHING in. Timing, resources etc, being the huge ones. Calling out the factory ECU has nothing to do with it, as it doesn't do any form of fancy boost control. It's all open loop boost control. You mention the Haltech Nexus, that's effectively two separate devices jammed into one box. What you quote about it, is proof for that. So now you've lost flexibility as a product too...   A product designed to do one thing really well, will always beat other products doing multiple things. Also, I wouldn't knock COTS stuff, you'd be surprised how many things are using it, that you're probably totally in love with As for the SpaceX comment that we're working directly with them, it's about the type of stuff we're doing. We're doing design work, and breaking world firsts. If you can't understand that I have real world hands on experience, including in very modern tech, and actually understand this stuff, then to avoid useless debates where you just won't accept fact and experience, from here on, it seems you'd be be happy I (and possibly anyone with knowledge really) not reply to your questions, or input, no matter how much help you could be given to help you, or let you learn. It seems you're happy reading your data sheets, factory service manuals, and only want people to reinforce your thoughts and points of view. 
    • I don't really understand because clearly it's possible. The factory ECU is running on like a 4 MHz 16-bit processor. Modern GDI ECUs have like 200 MHz superscalar cores with floating point units too. The Haltech Nexus has two 240 MHz CPU cores. The Elite 2500 is a single 80 MHz core. Surely 20x the compute means adding some PID boost control logic isn't that complicated. I'm not saying clock speed is everything, but the requirements to add boost control to a port injection 6 cylinder ECU are really not that difficult. More I/O, more interrupt handlers, more working memory, etc isn't that crazy to figure out. SpaceX if anything shows just how far you can get arguably doing things the "wrong" way, ie x86 COTS running C++ on Linux. That is about as far away from the "correct" architecture as it gets for a real time system, but it works anyways.
