hey guys pretty much as the topic states. i was just wondering if there are many risks involved in purchasing 2nd hand aftermarket coilpacks? over time do they start to die and not provide as much spark as they used to? is there anything to look for that could indicate that they are on their way out? the reason i am asking is a set of splitfires come up for a good price but im a bit worried about buying a 2nd hand set... cheers,

Mark

I probably wouldn't do it unless you're after just one or two spares. One thing to check is the amount of carbon deposits on the tips of the coils, check that the boot is not dried out or cracking, and check that the coil body does not have hairline fractures (could indicate that spark is being lost through one of these fractures).

Having said that, if you were to get a set dirt cheap then they may prove handy one day.. you're bound to get one or two good ones in the lot. I collected about 6-8 spare coils on my last car.. CA18DE.

If you're planning on replacing all 6 coils with splitfires and you're worried that when you hit boost you'll start misfiring, i'd probably ask for some sort of guarantee before you bought them.

Its very much a gamble.

I've found the coil casing begins to form cracks; All of mine had cracks but only 3 could be seen by eye; the other 3 had cracks starting which could only be seen when taking a picture of them with the camera in macro mode.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the price of JJR coils.

There's an old saying that has bit me in the arse many times. 'Poor man pays twice'.

Do it once do it right then you never have to worry about it again.
