No problem, you'd really need a ECU mate.

Its pretty much the first cab off the rank for mods.

FMIC offers no real performance gain until you upgrade turbo IMO.

Just adds a bit of lag, noticeable or not depends on many factors.

and it makes the car look uber cool LOL

IMO, I would invest in a decent turbo back exhaust system than an FMIC, invest in putting back the stock airbox with the snout and getting a decent panel filter, and maybe re enforce the stock rubber intake pipe.

I can't believe I forgot the exhaust!

I have a full 3" turbo-back Fujitsubo exhaust. The pod filter is enclosed in a heatshield (compatible with the stock snorkel). How could I re-enforce the intake pipe? I was thinking of getting a shorter alloy pipe.

Is it really necessary to upgrade the ECU if i'm planning on getting an FMIC?

The ecu will change your fuel maps, timing etc, get the most out of what you have.. You will get more gain out of it than a fmic alone. What might be a better option for the time being is an R34 gtt standard sidemount cooler, I'm pretty sure they are still bigger than the S2 R33s, and can be picked up fairly cheap, and you cant see them. So less chance of the police picking you up for it, and people nicking your car.

Id still go the ecu tho.

Since I'm keeping the mods fairly basic, I think I'll go for a piggy-back instead of the full one. Can anyone recommend an affordable (yet) reliable one?

Im in the same boat...about to start to save up for a new ecu. For a brief few moments I was considering a AFC neo but after doing some reading have decided that Im better off just saving a bit longer and getting the Greddy emanage ultimate.

My mods so far are K&N panel filter (im also anti pod), 3" turbo exhaust, and EBC. The boost controller had made a hell of a difference and only running 9psi max. Can't wait to get the EMU and get a good tune!

FMIC's will not give you a horsepower gain by themselves. They will only last longer till they heat soak, and thus they will not DECREASE your performance as fast as a SMIC. Now if you have a big turbo, but couldn't crank up the boost because you heat soak your SMIC really fast, and now you can crank it up (with a tune of course), you'll get HP. O yeah, and like they said, they look cool!

With a aftermarket ECU like AEM ECU, hp gains can be up to 38rwhp

(roughly 28rwkw) with a RB25DET at the same boost level.

A locally made Motec ECU probably would produce similar gains

but needs an adaptor loom.

Just fitting and tuning a HKS F-con pro (similar to Motec ECU) has

seen gains of I think was 20rwkw over PowerFC on a RB26DETT.

On a 2 litre motor, podfilter has a boost gain of roughly around 0.1bar (1.47psi) and 8rwkw.

Exhaust has a boost gain of roughly around 0.2bar (2.94psi) and 18rwkw.

I noticed GTR front mount has seen gains of 18rwkw.

So 28rwkw gain with a ECU vs 18rwkw gain with a front mount intercooler.

Hey im currently in the same boat as well, at the moment i have a blitz pod filter and a HKS SSQV BOV, now i need is a Blitz LM cooler and a Turbo back exhaust, Where did you get your Fujitsu turbo back exhaust from?

When i got my car 2 years ago it already came with a catback...and the i actually went fmic before any other mods solely because its more of a support/safety mod before i went to any power mods...especially with the blistering summer temps now i think its a good idea...

i couldnt agree anymore. Most pod filters under $30 bucks i found to be rubbish!!!

my first mod was a turbo upgrade :( every car needs a exhaust so that was first but i wouldnt call that a mod..

i did a few gtech 0-100 runs before and after my fmic installation.

there was essentially no difference in performance

however i did get maybe 200rpm more lag and seemed to have lost a bit of linearity in my power curve.

i wouldnt recommend a fmic unless you're going to use it (i didnt even up the boost...)
