Wireless Router

Hi guys,

Im new to all this online gaming stuff and I need help picking a wireless router that will be compatible with a ps3, laptop and wii. I have had a brief look in the shops and before I splash out for one I was wondering what people are using running similar things to me.

I will be using bigpond broadband if that helps everyone so I will already have the modem part I just need the wireless router.

The router will become the 'modem' so you wont need it any more.

A Netgear or Belkin will do the job nicely and are basic to setup/use

I bought a Dlink wireless router/modem, its OK but I think I should have gone for a netgear or Belkin like Nismoid says.

Get the Belkin N1 ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router. I know you got a modem but trust me, ditch it or sell it and get this all in one its good. Its also better to get all same hardware it works much better.

Also Belkin is the only one that offers life time warranty on hardware.

It does have a catch....its bloody expensive... oh well as they say you get what you pay for.

I have a Linksys WAG54G wireless modem/router. Pretty much everything is connected to it wirelessly, my PC, laptop and media centre. Its easy to setup and can be configured to your needs (i.e. security etc)

I wound't pay more than $150 for a modem/router combination.

If your happy with your modem, just buy a wireless router as you said. But it seems like these things are a dying breed as more people tend to buy the modem/router combination.

Some brands include D-link, Netgear, belkin and Linksys. Do a google search as some brands will be more user friendly than others, but will sacrifice certain features like security.

I have the WAG54G3 - and its shithouse

Locks up a lot, no firmware updates, nothing.

So get the older model if your going linksys.

Belkin/Netgear are far more basic for user setup. Linksys requires a bit of knowledge

Hey mate if your thinking about online gaming one thing you should think about is that using a wireless router for online gaming will create lag and that is not what you want when your about to die because you will die everytime, so if you are still going to get a wireless router you should connect your PS3 to your router with a lan cable.

Netcomm ive had some bad experiences with in the past. in particular the 1300 series they used to sell, dont know what its like these days

Dynalink is a little known brand but fantastic reliability and setup. Thats what ive got. 1025w i think it is.

Netgear is a solid bit of gear too. Basic router with wifi is DG834G and is around $100. My work has installed 50+ out in the field and they are great

Belkin have got a great rep but havnt used it myself

WRT54G... the most hackable wireless router on the face of the earth.

I've got one of them and a WAG54G2 (which is also quite customisable, the v3 sucks balls, but the v1 and v2 rock). Although if I was getting a new Wireless LAN and ADSL2+ modem I'd probably go for a Billion.

Ash, have you checked to see if you can run 1.02.14-Pluto firmware on your v3 WAG?

Ok so you say you have broadband - what type? ADSL? ADSL2? or Cable. It makes a big difference if you decide to buy a modem as you will have to buy a modem specific for your broadband type.

I would suggest simply buying a router as you first stated. I was using a wireless belkin router that came with a dell laptop that i bought, i used this for approx 6 months and never had an issue with it, it was relatively easy to configure and connection speeds were good.

Go for a well known respected brand but just buy a cheap one - they all do the same thing in the end and thats transfer data.

The real bottleneck will be in the ps3 and wii's (and any other wireless device you want to connect) wireless adapter speeds not the router.

Thats simply not true - i use a wireless netgear modem that came with my $99 optus fusion plan and i get pings of -30 and it never chokes. Downloads on average 500-600kbps.

Nah i havent, im kinda not really up with all this firmware stuff.

I cant find anything specific for the V3, so i dont try... CBF'd with a router thats more useless than it is now

And ye, wireless is fine for gaming.

Ive never had a problem and i get anywhere from 15-30ms anywhere in AUS

Im using DLink adsl2 wireless for my laptop and the xbox is connected to it by cable. I find i have to reset the router sometimes when it hasnt been used for a while. Dont know what thats about.

allthough mine may be a v1 it doesnt say on it

depending on the chipset that your router uses, you can put various custom firmware on it.

most routers are tiny computers which run a stripped down version of unix. basically if its something like a WRT etc you can put custom unix compiles on it. the unit from factory is good, but basically with a custom version of unix, you can put your own firewall, routing tables, ftp server, shell server etc. and customise the hell out of it. google Open-WRT and you'll find a tonne of sites with custom firmwares.

For example there's a hack for the WRT that allows you to attach a storage device and share it on the network... without any PC's having to be connected or running. you can even wire up your router to run a tiny server that allows you turn your kettle/lights on thru the internet, again without having any PC's attached or on.

Wow lots of replys thanks guys! Um to answer a few questions the reason why im just after thr router is because its adsl2 on bigpond and a modem was already supplied. I just wanted a wireless router becuase everything I have has wifi on it so I thought it would be easier to sync everything up without messy cables everywhere.

The laptop and ps3 reside downstairs but the wii sits upstairs so it made sense to get a wireless router setup.

the Wii im not worried about speed as all I do on that is download VC games.

You might have problems with signal strength going upstairs to downstairs, im not sure i have never tried it.

Go for wireless N if you want speed not wireless G.

This would only be faster if the wireless adapters he had for his laptops, and game consoles support 802.11n
