Hi all, ive recently put in a GFB Mach 1 BOV with spring adjustment to flutter...

1st of all, ive heard spring used BOV's could cause boost leaks... Im concerned about this because my boost still reaches its max 11 psi but drops down faster than it usually does, could this be considered a leak? I only ask cuz it used to be stable at max psi for longer than it is now...Also my coilpacks might be going so could this be the reason why its doing this?

2nd, as ive adjust the springs of BOV to flutter from turbo, how much damage could it possibly do? If so in how long (years. months)?

GTR BOV's are spring operated and good for over 600rwkw. So what you heard is quite incorrect.

Boost will tend to die off a tad in the top end, its a small turbocharger.

You might have a leak, without testing with another BOV you wont really know (factory BOV is perfectly fine)...

Could be leaky cooler piping elsewhere possibly.

As for BOV flutter - there is 100 threads on the topic Cons/Pros so on and so forth. Have a read of the FI Guide. It contains a link somewhere.

If this thread heads down this path ill have to lock it (thats a warning for the whores who carry on about BOVs)

as nismoid said, spring bov's are completely fine, unless the spring has lost it's tention. even my 15 year old standard bov is still as strong as an ox. check all piping which air travels through and you might find your boost pressure drop problem, but i doubt it's bov related.

you'll know when your coilpacks are dieing as you'll get misfire under boost. they won't have anything to do with leaking boost. also considering you own a newer model skyline i doubt the coilpacks would already be on their way.

when you tighten the screw on your bov it's adjusting the spring tight enough so that no air travels through the bov, and just bounces back and forth between the turbo and the throttle body making the flutter sound. it makes the aftermarket bov useless as it's not even being used. you're better off taking it off and just blocking the standard bov for the same effect and sound.

there's always big debates that compressor surge (turbo flutter) is bad for the standard ceramic/nylon turbo and will cause damage. in my theory it will cause shaft play over time because of forcing the momentum of the compressor and exhaust wheels back and forwards which they're not designed to do. also not to mention that your fuel economy will go out the window, and your car will run jerky and retarded. just to be safe i wouldn't do it.

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.

Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
