If you got the time you can do it yourself.

Most important, remember to top up you water after installing new turbo cause you'll loose abit during disconnecting the lines.

*note if your cars a 89 model, you may need a new oil line fitting and abit of line.

That seems like a reasonable workshop price...if it includes a genuine gasket too and new washers its not bad...

As for doing it yourself...there are a few factors to consider...

How competent are you at mechanical work and are you familiar with doing turbo swaps?

Do you have all the required components?

Do you have the proper tools for the job?

Most of the turbo swaps i have done over the past 2-3 years have gone pretty smoothly as i used to be a mechanic so i know enough about what i'm doing plus i have access to a extensive range of tools...they are still fiddly jobs at times if things don't go smoothly...so if your answer to any of the above questions is no then i think its a good idea to let someone else do it...but he's gotta be competent as well...seem some dodgy turbo installs done by supposed professionals...

Whatever your choice is...good luck...

As for doing it yourself...there are a few factors to consider...

How competent are you at mechanical work and are you familiar with doing turbo swaps? Not at all, I'm a Chef and no Mechanical background

Do you have all the required components? only Turbo

Do you have the proper tools for the job? just a set box that I bought them from supercheap

as i answered the above question, i dont think i wanna do it myself.. so, anyone wanna help for spare cash?

cheers

ill do it for half that price...

first time i swapped turbos it took a while but when i took my HF off and put stocky in i did it in like an hour.... hopefully no threads or nuts are stuck on yours...

pm me if you wish

Yeh its a pretty fiddly job if you've never done it before.

Especially if you don't have good tools (good quality ring spanners and breaker bar) since there's not much room to work with.

Getting it off isn't so bad but getting it back on again (properly) is a bitch

A decent mechanic should be able to do it in 2hrs comfortably. 3hrs max (including lunch)

I paid about $350 to have my timing belt, idler+tensioner, radiator flush, water pump and some other fiddly bits done and that was 9hrs worth of labour.....

so $550 seems like a bit of a stretch to me

dont doubt yourself, but if Haysey's willing,id take him up on his offer if i was you dude.

i wouldnt do it again but i did mine plus change oil line from 6pm 1 night after work till about

11:30pm with 1 set of sidchrome spanners and im far from a mechanic.

Like i said if you got the time, you cant stuff it up.the only thing is threaded nuts which = TIME

i changed mine by myself its not that hard took me the weekend just cruising along and it was rainin on and off too... ull need more tools than that read the thread in diy by preditor it shows how to do it i reckon if u've done a few things to your car like changed the exhaust and fmic u should be able to pull it off.. if u did the dump pipe u would have had the heat shields off be fore and should have seen all the oil and water lines before!

ONE word of advice make sure u let your car sit there for ages after youve put it back 2getha let it get up to opperating temp and let it sit.. i made the mistake of just fillin the radiator up and warmin it up 4 a minute and just taking it for a spin... well i had a huge air lock!! whoops!

That is hardly what I would call cheap for a workshop price. If you're in sydney (i'm too tired from work and can't be bothered to look up) have a chat to northern beaches performance. You'll be pleasantly suprised at the quality of work and price of the job - tell trent chris sent ya.
