hi people. its not quite photography, but who has setup some kind of video recording device in their car? im keen on doing some track days ect, and would like to know how to setup an in-car cam???

I have made one for in car footage which runs off the headrest of the car.

It is very basic and easy.

I dont have it anymore so cant show pics of it but all i used was:

2 square Rods of metal (say 2cm X 2cm) one about 40cm long, one about 20cm.

2 pieces of thin rubber (so you don't scratch headrest poles.)

A round rod so camera mount can go on it (10cm should be enough)

and some bolts to do them up up

Basically drill holes in 2 square rods so they can be tightened either side of headrests poles.

Tighten onto headrest (rubber in between to not scratch poles) so it runs between driver and passenger headrests.

Drill hole in round rod and end of square rod and run bolt through it at the end of long square rod. If you get the right size rod it will fit onto any camera stand mount.

By using the camera stand mount you bought for your camera it is assured the camera will fit and you have the ability to swivel it to get the right view.

I'm not the best at explaining but when i get time i will draw it up on paper and scan it onto computer.

I highly doubt this will be acceptable for track use as they may find it is dangerous for driver etc

I just made a bracket which bolts to the parcel shelf. You can then bolt the camera to it using the thread on the underside of the camera. Use the spot on the shelf above the ATTESSA unit. Gives a good view of driver plus track and the scrutineers are ok with it because everything is bolted down. That way you dont have to worry about bits of rod/gaffer tape and arguments as to how well it is secured.

Hi Sam,

If you'd like to get great movies without drilling any holes, I'm happy to let you know what I've done to get a full picture frontal view over the bonnet with only the tops of the windscreen wipers to frame the picture.

Three supports are required, and extra realism with a faint damper effect will come from the third support - BEAUTIFUL!!!

The items I used are i) a cheap universal GPS/Mobile phone Holder (with its suction cap) ii) the central stalk out of a CULLMANN Travel Tripod Kit from a photographic store screwed on to its suction cap and iii) a basic tripod

1) The CULLMANN suction cap is positioned from your passenger front window near its most forward position just above the sill and screwed into this is the rods/stalk that comes out horizontally to where the tripod screw-support elbows upward to screw into the base of the handycam that you already have.

2) Position the cheap GPS/Mobile Phone Holder from above and use the suction cap to attach to near the top of the windscreen: and then clamp it over the top of the handycam. You may need 3 hands to manoeuvre this but I did it with 2!!

3) The basic tripod sits on the passenger seat and it tucks in underneath the handycam with maximum pressure. It's absolutely wonderful how with hard acceleration or braking that your movies will reflect a faint damping effect from the basic tripod that sits on your passenger seat!!

Tell me how it goes if you try it this way... LOOK MOM NO HOLES!!!

the parcel shelf way is the easiest.

dont buy a hard drive or a dvd camera. they are seceptable to skipping. buy a mini dv in 3ccd if u can gives a better qualtiy shot when used in conjunction with a proper 3ccd tape. as long as it's mini dv i say.

im using a panasonic mini dv 3ccd gs230 and the footage is pretty good.

ebay have them much cheaper than the good guys.

buy urself an extra battery or 2. 2300mah, i think, is the biggest rated battery u can get for this camera from ebay as well. the stock one is poxy.

with the stock battery and a 2300mah. u can nab 2 and a bit hrs of footage.
