Depends on your goals. I know I deliberated for quite some time with what I wanted, didn't stick to a proper diet or anything...so I can't give more precise advice. I can assure that simply increasing intake of good shit will give results, but it might be a little slow for your liking or you might find you aren't 'feeling it' so to speak.

If you decide that you want to smash it out a bit faster or want an easier way to increase calories again without having to cook so much, you might be interested in looking at a good* mass gainer. It will provide the extra fuel you'll need for sure. Otherwise definitely just stick with the BN and push hard. This is where you want to get into the big lifts like deadlifts and squats.

It's right in the lumbar erectors muscle bellies on each side and the tops of my gluts.

Tis' a good feeling!

If you're feeling it too much in your lumber you're probably not doing it right.

Make sure the back is locked so tight it isn't flexing.

As TTT posted, Mark Ripptoe - starting strength.

Trying to decide if I should be getting something now to bulk up a little or just stick with it and increase my eating.

I have lost a total of 8kg over the past few months now since starting.

Currently sitting at 69kg 170cm

Are your strength gains increasing? I wouldn't worry if they are.

It's amazing how much body fat you actually have. unless your aim is to 'look' big dont put on false size.

I rate power to weight ratios. Again, it's whatever goal you're after, look good in a shirt, or look good naked.

Did flat bench DB press with 50s tonight for reps, gym finally got DBs bigger than 42s! Geez!

What's the go with gyms only going upto 40kg odd in dumbells?

Seems like its a rare thing to find a gym that has heavier dumbells.

Anyway, props on getting the 50's done!

Kasko, if u are ordering from BN, let me know so I can get in on it!

How many reps? How do you get those suckers up into starting position?

Thanks fellas :)

My little book says I only got four out. Got em up myself but used a mate to guide the weight (to make sure the DBs didn't swing one way or the other). Will shoot for more next time!

The sets went like: 30-8 / 36-8 / 42-8 / 50-4. Felt like I had a bit more but the form was going, so not to be. I know I need to strengthen my shoulders and core to improve my stability. My shoulder presses are pathetic.

Yeah I find it surprising how few gyms seem to have the larger DBs. Would appear to be a staple to me.

I also seem to be the only one at my gym who carries a notebook around and writes everything down. Do any of you guys write down your iron for the day/night? Maybe it's just my OCD!

This. Let the strength gains put on the kg. People get too caught up in weight figures when trying to get big, which are meaningless without BF% to back them up. It kind of mystifies me when someone says they would like to weigh xxxkg or set weight goals without knowing what they'll look like at that weight.

Also big on power to weight ratios. Putting on fat is only going to reduce this! I love being light at 79kg and benching the same (and sometimes more) than my 100kg friends.

Interesting, my gym has 65kg dumbells. Be a long time before I can find a use for them, besides side raising them off the rack to see if I could lift one with one hand lol.

I don't write down my stuff, I'm that OCD that I can remember exactly what I did last session. Not a bad idea though, if you want to track long term progress. It's easy for my memory to blur things that happened last year into "a few months ago"!

I'm 6'3.

I might be able to help you with this or at least provide some reasoning.

Dependant on the main target market of the gymnasium really and their budgets associated. They are not cheap and for the amount of people using them in a commercial style setting can be negligiable.

For example, expect to pay about $3 - 4 per kilo for a basic dumbell. Working with a 40kilo set (so 80 kilo at $4) is $320, then theres 42.5's then theres 45s then theres 47.5s and the 50s.

Being a large facility with a membership base over 3000 members we use what i beleive one of the best dumbells out there, the "HammerStrength" range which comes in quite a large set up to the 50 kilo mark. expensive but beautiful dumbells none the less.

The worst thing being is that if you are in a remote facility then you need to also factor in courier costs etc.

Now the other thought of a gym owner can also be the following, if i keep the dumbells maxed out at 40kilo any steroid/beefcakes who like to throw the equipment, well they can go somewhere else as I am targeting the main population, the die hards can go to a die hard gym

You see, as heavy weightlifters, you are not the majority of the population which is really what a succesful owner wants. When showing the average member around do you think the owner wants to show the "avg member" a freeweight area full of massive people yelling, grunting and groaning? no. as it can be quite overwhelming to a new average customer.

So although i beleive 40 - 50 kilo dumbells should be in gyms to assist a minority in a commercial gym, i can understand the thought process if not, unfortunately it does not boad well with weightlifters but that is pretty much it in a nutshell.

Just thinking though chest pressing them would show a limited range of motion as you would really only get a straight up motion because they would hit wouldn't they if you try to bring them in?

Anyone use them and if so would for, don't tell me bicep curls :)

Loved the explanation mate, I think you nailed it. The gym I've been going to now for the past 1.5 years you would class as very commercial.

    • You've given zero info about your setup. Step 1: make sure all the standard equipment are working as they should. If they're not, go investigate why. Step 2: Make sure all your wiring is done properly. Know which RB20 you have, most likely "silvertop" a.k.a R32/A31 anything after 1989. Step 3: make sure your ECU is tuned properly. Standard will barely run in this situation.
    • Depending on your use case, prop valve will almost always be a better choice.
    • I think... in the US, Silvermax is the equivalent of BC Racing, i.e. cheap Taiwanese built suspension that gets turned for "local" conditions. Back in the day in Australia, you could get MCA street for about $1300 and they were awesome. Don't know about now... In saying that, my real world TEIN experience: I got some street basis z for my old Liberty (BR9), and they were awesome ($800-odd delivered from demon-tweeks in the UK). so Don't discount TEIN
    • yeah my RedBull X2010 on Grand Valley is only good enough for bronze... I can't hit silver arrgh.
    • 100% this. Long ago, I had a guy from the R31 club who set my BNR32 up (adjustable arms all round). He did an awesome job, was an after-work kinda thing where I had to bring a slab of beer. My car never drove better, and I stupidly got a random tyre shop to check the toe angles when I changed tyres, and they ruined the alignment. tl:dr- it takes a lot of skill to set up your car lowered from factory properly, and is worth paying the $200+ it takes.
