nope, proper dips with dip belt... I do lean forward bringing the chest into it so its not a strict tricep dip... I just feel really strong on that movement and my ROM is good too so just not sure why its not transferring over to other pressing movements

60kg is epic, I can see why you're concerned it's not transferring more gains in your bench

You have to consider the difference in shoulder position for each movement of course, but you would still think if you can dip with 60kg you should push out 100kg on bench easy

Re rope-climbs: is it anything special for a male to be able to scale a 7m rope using only upper body with ease? can do it 3 times including lowering without legs with probably 30 sec break lol.

Re dips: yeah I was curious a while ago. I can dip BW+35kg 8 reps and bench dip BE+70kg 8 reps (78kg BW) but struggle with 80kg bench press. WTF.

Nick, the first assumption I come to when I get asked this is technique/range of motion (ROM)

With a bench press or even a STRICT military press, you pretty much cant cheat or shorten the ROM

Its very easy to shorten ROM on Dips, in fact I see more people doing them incorrectly than correctly

But, unless I actually see you doing the movement, I'm hesitant to guess any further

Another reason though may be grip width. If your triceps are stronger, you will be stronger on dips unless you have a very narrow grip on the bench

How close is your grip to the outer rings (81cm)

Make sure its a proper power bar though, not an Olympic bar. Easiest way to tell is from the edge of the collar to the ring measures 200mm on an Olympic bar and 250mm on a power bar, this is the official measurement on competition equipment

As a comparison to give you guys an idea from our gym

Max can bench 140kg x 3, will probably do 155kg at Worlds next month, and reps around 40kg on dips at a bw of 88kg

Alen benches 140kg and dips with around 40-50 for 10 at a bw of 90kg

These bench numbers are official paused benches, not touch and go, normally takes 5-10kg off your best

This is just an indicator. Max also has much stronger triceps than Alen

Not sure on the value of this, maybe some sort of guide. The problem is we dont really keep close track of our assistance movements, as theyre done late and numbers are impacted by fatigue

Its the main lifts we concentrate most on

If the guys were to ever do dips fresh, I'm sure they could probably dip with 80kg for a single

Re dips: yeah I was curious a while ago. I can dip BW+35kg 8 reps and bench dip BE+70kg 8 reps (78kg BW) but struggle with 80kg bench press. WTF.

Sounds about the exact same as me haha. Although i do mostly dumbell flat bench and its mostly after incline bench.

My goal isnt about getting stronger, it would be a nice by product though...

Thanks for the feedback

I'll have to get somebody to video me dipping, I think my ROM is good but I've made that mistake before

My dipping grip is definitely narrower than my bench grip... I always grip the bar a hands width from the start of the knurling... not sure if olympic or power bar, will have to measure and check hand placing to the rings

Yes I dip as assistance as well, never start with it

I've never done a proper 1RM on the bench but I know it's nowhere near any of those you quoted above

are you going to be around tomorrow? would love to come down and have a few lifts, get some advice on form etc

Mitch, no discomfort in those two movements that I can feel.

Keep up with the ice, self massage with the tennis ball and do some light stretching for your chest, shoulders, rotator cuff, triceps and biceps.

Try a few of these sort of things as well with a theraband.

Also, try doing shoulder external rotation and internal rotation using the theraband with your shoulder abducted at 90 degrees and your elbow at 90

Just gauge where you're at in terms of discomfort with those type of movements and see if you can gradually work back into your workout without pain.

If its still bothering you, go see someone about it.

Not sure if you post Youtube vids on here, but this is an overload exercise we use.

The SlingShot allows help off the chest, but the triceps still need to lock the bar out

I use this exercise to see which lifters need help with triceps and which dont

We aim to strengthen the weakest part of a lift

How are you with other delt intensive exercises, Nick? Military press etc.? Keep in mind that any decently wide grip on bench is going to shift weight off your tris and onto your delts, moving away from the dip movement.

Tricep dips should be more comparable to decline bench with a close grip.

So many variables to it though, you'd really need to see you training and take into account the rest of your program including exercise order.

Nick, I'm in the gym everyday from 11am till 9pm

sorry got my days mixed up, I meant Sunday (as you have the novice comp on the 19th)... I'll try and make it down

BTW they have Oly bars at my gym and I'm a fair distance away from the rings... narrower than the guy in the vid you posted

Birds: hard to judge because I can't handle anywhere near the same amount of weight overhead... can't really diagnose this stuff without seeing form I guess... I have a suspicion that I'm fairly tricep dominent

    • Well, turns out not a lot happened from back then to now, between life again, and working on 3 separate other cars (only one of which was mine, and will now be departing the household soon).   So I decided with the whole "don't go outside, it's a cyclone!" Turning in to being not a whole lot, I ventured down to the garage, found a couple of water leaks in the shed (the main one I've already fixed), and then ended up "stuck" as it started pouring rain, and I didn't want to walk back inside in the pouring rain. This meant I ended up taking a look at the Skyline, and trying to work out what past Matt had been upto. I retraced a few things out from scratch, added the rest of the power feeds in that I needed for the indicators, and headlights. Double checked I'd wired a few things up correctly (and worked out how I wired a few things to begin with), updated my sparse notes. Added one of the ground points. Oh, and got really really dusty, as the car is quite dirty. Wrote up quickly what should be left for me to do with the wiring too. Adding the below photos more for my records than anything else. I need to make myself a proper book for the car that details everything, and how I've done it, but for now, this is my records... The third image is my most important one for me, and I need to draw it out into a proper schematic eventually. The last photo is my re-written list, I'd have put it on the white board, except I had to take the white board down to fix one of the water leaks.
